There's no excusing what happened last night, but surprisingly we are off to a better start this year than last year. It doesn't seem like it, but we are.
Last year we had 2 non-conference losses: BYU (decent team that made the tournament) and Michigan State (lost in the elite 8)
This year 2 non-conference losses: Stanford (will most likely make the tournament) and Kentucky (will probably win it all).
Last year we had 1 good non-conference win: North Carolina (lost in the second round)
This year we actually have 2 good non-conference wins: Iowa and Cal (both should make the tournament)
Last year's Big 12 schedule: People forget that we actually lost the first two Big 12 games last year (OU and Oklahoma State)
This year's Big 12 schedule: 1-1 (win over Tech and loss to OU)
Which is why I keep saying 6-8 losses will get us a very good seed due to the Big 12. We finished 23-10 last year and 12-8 in the Big 12. That was good enough to get us a 7 seed last year. The Big 12 is also way ahead of where it was last year in terms of RPI. Clearly we can't continue to play like we did last night, but everything is still right within our reach.
