Clarington apparently cleared by the NCAA (waiting on Texas?)

In a good-sized class, Devo worth the gamble.

Potential game-changer at a position of dire need (for what feels like a century)

It should also be a wake-up call for the coaching staff and administrators.

Too many "what ifs" here. Why not target recruits who we know can qualify? Throw in Cherry and our 2015 class ain't Top 10 any longer.

It's still a damn good group, but it's definitely lost some luster.
I mean, it definitely sucks. But this stuff really does happen every year to a lot of programs. We got bit by it this year. Cherry doesn't really count, his situation was entirely different. But I don't think you can ignore players the caliber of Johnson and Clarington simply because they're grade risks. You hope for the best so you get a great talent. And if you don't, then you missed out on two scholarships.

Lampkin is the player that surprised me. Texas shouldn't have showed so much loyalty there. That fire had been burning for a long time.

The program isn't in position where it can pick and choose through a myriad of 4 star recruits and take those who qualify easily instead of taking a risk.  It is what it is and taking a risk seems worth it if you can land a talented kid who might be a difference maker.  None of the Florida 5 took a spot from a kid of equal talent which UT was recruiting, so what the heck.  I hope UT keeps taking chances and Charlie builds this program back up.

Yeah I understand taking a couple risks, especially now trying to rebuild. But 4 is too many in any class. Thats 20 percent of your class most years. One or two is acceptable. Another year or two we should really not have to take any except for the very top kids. I was speaking mainly to the kids realizing what they need to do to get in. They are recruited as sophomores now. Or at least start getting attention and attending camps. They need to realize that they gotta get in the class also.

And I dont count Cherry as anywhere near the same as these other kids. Impossible to tell a quitter before they get here. Or whatever his issue was for leaving.

There's the rub.

Did we stop recruiting quality TX players while hoping these guys qualify? That's what I'm struggling with right now. Are they rare, incomparable talents? Maybe Devo is

Recruits are a risk regardless of location. Lampkin didn't qualify and he's from Texas. Major had qualifying issues and he's from Texas.
You recruit the best player regardless of location. Florida, Louisiana, and Claifornia players are no more of a risk than Texas based recruits.

In 3 weeks if Burt, Davis, and some other OOS guys have big games people will be saying we should recruit out of state more.

My only counter-argument is it's probably easier to decipher a TX kid's transcript to see if he'll qualify. Seems to me the FL kids were more difficult to read and evaluate. It appears we knew Lampkin's and Major's challenges right away and had a plan in place.

Meh, the staff knew some of the Florida kids were academic risks. It wasn't a matter of not having a plan in place, they were just willing to take the risk.
Recruiting is always a risk. Players aren't always going to turn out and you are going to miss on a few targets.

If we get 2 or 3/5 productive players on the roster from Florida, that's a good hit rate. It may not seem like it, but it it is.

Qualify for next yr possibly? Do we keep on these guys even if they couldn't initially qualify to UT?

Guys, you're way jumping the gun here. Could be a girl. Could be frustration from waiting. Chill.

If Clairington doesn't make it campus,I believe that puts UT at 78 scholarship players after accounting for Merrick moving up from a grey shirt. If the team had started with a full team and at this point in the preseason had list seven players for the season due to injury, suspension or whatever, people would be going nuts. Losing seven scholarship players due to poor recruiting evaluations is still looking seven scholarship players. It isn't a positive any way you try to spin it.

Is this decision by the NCAA subject to appeal or is The NCAA judge, jury, and executioner?

Is what it is, and nothing we can do about it except attempt to enjoy the upcoming season.

Max Olson tweeted that he talked to Clarington and He has to retake ACT

Since Clarington was most likely going to red shirt anyway..This is not a bad deal

It took them a month to figure that out and only a couple of weeks before the season starts. Sounds like your guilty until proven innocent.
