2015 Recruiting Season is in full swing

SHA, regarding Burt, you can't judge the staff on the outcome of the recruitment of one young man.  This staff has done a remarkable job of national recruiting for 2015 and 2016, developing current players, cleaning out malcontents on the current roster, and yes, holding together certain parts of the roster with bubble gum and duct tape.  I hope that Burt remains with Texas, but if he decides to sign with Auburn, how do we blame the staff?

At the time of Earl's recruitment, how would you have felt had you known that his decision would have come down to whether or not he had to get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night?  Really?  I'm certain that you have read The Tyler Rose.  Had he gone to OU, it would have meant no Earl to tackle Bevo, no Heisman during Earl's career, and no Tim Campbell.  In short, it would have left a huge void in the history of Texas football.  I think it would have also cost Earl a valuable mentor.  There is no possible way that Switzer could have filled one of Royal's shoes.

Several powerful quotes from that book about Earl:

  • regarding a broken hand in high school:  '...the break required a cast.  This didn't put a damper on his burning desire to excel, "no matter what the cost."  Foremost in Earl's mind was the thought that he couldn't let Coach La Croix (jhs coach and later hs coach) or the team down; in the end, he went to the shop classroom, and cut the cast off.  Earl played that entire year with a broken hand, vowing never to wear a cast on his hand again.  It was a promise he was to keep throughout his entire career.'  pgs 18-19
  • 'Coach La Croix's widow, Ann, heard much about Earl from her husband (Coach La Croix died in 1979)...Even at that early stage of his life, Earl could see the big picture, and he would let nothing get in his way.  He was convinced of his destiny...He needed to stay on the straight and narrow, refining the skills that would take him to great heights."  pg 19
  • Royal's promise to Ann Campbell during his in-home visit in Tyler, "Earl will be good for Texas, just as Texas will be good for Earl.  What he will get is my personal concern for his well-being and an education.  Nothing more, and nothing less."  ..."when Darrell Royal finished speaking, he had won a large vote of confidence in the mind of Ann Campbell."  pg 38
  • "Earl, however, had yet to speak."  (He had heard rumors of racism, those rival schools still try to spread.)  ..."I hope you don't think Earl Campbell is for sale, 'cause I'm not.  My people were bought and sold when they didn't have a choice, and I just wanted you to know that I'M NOT FOR SALE."  pg 38
  • "When Earl went to bed that evening, he silently prayed 'God, if it's your will that I should attend The University of Texas, then I'll get up during the night to pee.  If not, if I sleep through the night, then I'll know your choice for me will be the University of Oklahoma.'"  pgs 40-41

---All bullet points from The Tyler Rose:  The Earl Campbell Story; An Authorized Biography, as told to Paddy Joe Miller, pgs 18,19, 38, 40, 41

Many of those quotes remind me of something Strong might say to a recruit, or the characteristics that Strong looks for in his players.  It reinforces my opinion that Strong is rebuilding Texas Football in the winning tradition of Darrell Royal.  He is building on character, hard work, self-discipline, and teamwork.  Is there any other way?

Hook 'em!

I don't think Burt's recruitment is anything like Earl's. Different time.

What I am and was saying is - if this staff can keep Burt in the fold, that will say A LOT about their abilities and skills as recruiters. But as Texas fans we're trained to not put a lot of stock in getting Florida recruits (without connection to UT) so I don't think anyone is prepared to "blame" the staff if he bolts.

But if they keep him, they will have pulled one from the heart of SEC country against all the SEC schools. IMO, that's a statement.

I've read the book on Earl. Saw him play HS ball. Used to live two houses down from his mom on "Ann Campbell Rd". Have met him and Tim in person, had beers with them. As great of an athlete as he was (and he was one of the greatest, ever) he is an even larger and greater human being.

Chris Clark, the 5-star Tight End prospect says he will visit Texas on Dec. 6 weekend and will announce that following Monday on Twitter.

IMO, this does not bode well for the Horns. How do you know you'll be ready to announce on that Monday when you haven't visited yet? Unless, you already have your mind made up?

Texas will need to make quite a splash, IMO.

Baylor leads big for Holton Hill.

Thats a good question.  Looks like he has a visit with USC setup for this weekend and then UT the following.  The hope would be that he already developed a pretty good relationship with Strong and Watson, and the Official Visit is just to confirm what he already knows.  Heres to hope.

2015 CB/SS Sheldrick Redwine (6'2, 190) of Miami (Killian High School) has scheduled his visit

Redwine -- “He’s a good guy (Coach Vaughn). We found out that our family has ties together, they’re from like the same neighborhood down here, so that was interesting. He’s just a great guy, he tells me that he feels I can come in and make an early impact and be a good contributor to their team.â€

“I never was in contact with them (Texas), never got any mail, they just came out of the blue one day. Now we talk a lot.â€

Hodges --  "I'll just be looking at the environment, the coaches, how they perform at the game.  I'm looking forward to seeing the coaches and the players play (against TCU)."

"He (Coach Wickline) just tells me it's the perfect place to be, coming in as a JUCO guy, filling that void.  Their line is going to be young, they've got someone leaving, he wants me be that guy and start for them."

"Texas has always been one of my favorite schools.  When I think of Texas, they're always at the top. I think of Vince Young, all those guys. I grew up in Mississippi but grew up watching Texas football."

"You have to have great coaching wherever you go.  I'm just looking at coaching, who is going to take time out to coach, who is going to take the time out to help me get my education."

Wescott Eberts has made a rundown on 5 recruits (MJ, Lodge, Sheffield, Jamabo and Warren)

Here is his  segment on Chris Warren

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football-recruiting/2014/11/26/7265563/texas-oklahoma-am-baylor-alabama-ole-miss-recruiting-2015

Rockwall running Chris Warren
6'2 | 232 pounds | **** | No. 85 player nationally | No. 10 running back | No. 11 player in Texas

A truly jumbo running back who played some defensive end at Rockwall in his younger days, Warren hasn't been active on the recruiting trail this fall. H's focused on his senior season, giving few interviews and putting off his official visits.

At the beginning of August he visited Stanford, where he was sold on the academics and his fit in the physical Cardinal offense, but his projections from the industry have revolved around Texas in recent months. He and his mother developed a good relationship with Strong during the spring.

Several weeks after the visit to Stanford, Warren released his top six -- Iowa, Oregon, Stanford, Texas, Texas Tech and Washington. The plan has been to take his official visits after the season, which would leave one of those out. Since he hasn't yet visited Iowa, but took unofficial trips to each of the other schools, it would make sense for him to make at least one to Iowa City.

And there are some differing offensive styles on that list -- more pro-style attacks in Iowa, Stanford, Texas, and Washington, and spread attacks in Oregon and Texas Tech. After his visits, which offense will he see as the best fit?
