Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

If I remember was a three way tie ou won the vote.

Texas beat Ohio St, TT do not remember if won or lost bowl game.

Belive poor memory, Big 12 had more ranked teams that year.

2008 was that the year Texas had thier coach in waiting? Always wondered how that would have turned out good or bad

I used to read Scipio Tex's stuff often and always enjoyed his stuff. I haven't been able to read him for the last several years but today ran into one of his articles, this one about the Texas/ou exit to the SEC and the national college football landscape.

Here is one paragraph from that article that I thought was pretty remarkable. I hope my crediting this to Scipio Tex would suffice in posting the content.

"The full implications of the SEC dominating Texas 29 million televisions and mindshare (if you want to fully understand this, it’s explained here) have not even been felt for Big 12 schools yet. Beyond Texas and the Aggies delivering all key Lone Star markets, the SEC Game of the Week featuring non-Texas teams will be the third most watched game in the state of Texas. Not Houston/Cincy or Texas Tech/Okie State. Tier 2 and Tier 3 state of Texas recruits with NFL aspirations and “test against the best” mentalities will start to understand that playing their ball at Arkansas, Ole Miss and Kentucky is more appealing than playing at Kansas State or Baylor. In short, the bifurcation is already here and it will only increase."

He just released his annual Team preview. https://www.amazon.com/2023-Longhorn-Football-Prospectus-Thinking/dp/B0C9SPDYB5

He also does a weekly podcast segment with Bobby Burton, drops each Saturday I believe. You can watch on youtube or via podcast platform.

I do. If you finished second in your conference, how can you possibly say you're the best there is? It's already been proven that you're not.
If we’re going to do playoffs in college football, I wish conference champions were automatically in.  Then, have a handful of the next best teams fill out the bracket.

Conference championships ought to be coveted.  For the good of the sport.

Which conferences though? There are 11 FBS conferences.

The power 5 conferences will all have their champions in the 12 team playoff regardless. Does one bid go to the highest rank conference champion of the other conferences - I think it does but can't remember.

Correct, all Power 5 conference champs auto qualify. The highest ranked Group of 5 team goes. Then 6 at large bids.

Top 4 get a bye into the quarterfinals.

I don't mind this format. Conference champs get rewarded, and teams in tougher conferences don't get punished for playing a tough schedule. Not a perfect format, but at least it gets settled on the field

A bye will certainly be coveted. This is probably why the field is 12 vs 16 teams

This will presumably result in a lower ranked non Big 2 conference team getting a bye, so definitely an advantage for the the minor/other conferences.  Also a conference champion could be outside the top 12 teams and still make the playoffs,  and maybe even get a bye.

One comment is a team that makes the playoffs,  but doesn't play in the conference championship game effectively also has an extra week off.

Personally I would prefer that they either did away with the conference championship games. Or if they want to keep them , then also have the #3 team play the #4 team.

No matter what they came up with it wasn't going to be perfect. The fact that they got everyone to agree is an indication that it's a reasonable compromise.

1. Conference championship games. If you do away with them, what do you do in the event of a tie for 1st? Coin flip?

2. The #3 vs #4 game you mention has Meh written all over it. You'll never see a team fired up to play for third place in a conference. Except maybe aggy.

3. Reward the conference champions with a bye. Everybody else needs to play that first week.

They could have whatever rules they want for tie breaker.  The most straightforward way is the same way they pick the 2 teams that play in it, ranking?

The reason for #3 vs #4 would be two fold, mostly to give those two teams in the 2 major conferences an extra chance for a quality win to maybe get them into the playoffs,  the second reason is so you don't potentially give the #3 team an advantage,  if they are ranked high enough to make the playoffs.

My understanding is the current system already rewards the 4 highest ranked conference champions with a bye. If your conference champion is ranked bellow 4 other conference champions, then IMHO that team doesn't deserve a bye.
