*****Game Thread: #22 Texas Longhorns vs. Iowa State Cyclones*****

I want to see our secondary get all over them like Patterson used too at TCU. You’ll get some PI penalties but it frustrates the receivers. I guess our coaches don’t think we have the personnel to play that right now. We have to figure something out because everyone else we play pass better than we saw today.
Agreed 100%. I always preferred tight coverage with lots of pressure when calling defenses. Its pretty clear that our defensive strength is stopping the run but we do not have the edge guys or shutdown dbs yet. More need for edge guys like Vasek or the 3 star kid that seems to be blowing up lately.

Texas loses this one in years past, but a win is a win, so I'll take it.

Offensive players of the game: Worthy, Bijan and RoJo

Defense players of the game: Ford and Cook

We got lucky, but earned a lucky win. That drop saved us, that game was a loss if he holds on.

Now OKS is the big undefeated bully next week. (game still in play). Playing for Big 12 tiebreaker next week.

Under Sark we have 1 win against a ranked team, and 1 away win. Next week is both. BIG.

Texas defense has to decide if they are going to play 2 deep/ 2 high or a single safety, are they going to play a zone or man to man with help over the top, saw too many balls caught where defenders are looking at each other as if to say " was I supposed to have that or is that your guy" Im still trying to figure out how the ISU WR was so far open when everyone in the house knew he was going to be the intended target....

We are seven games into the season, we can no longer accept the excuse that they are young and inexperienced

Is this a Pete K defense or is it a Gary P defense ?

Got that right.

Anyone else here old enough to watch Texas get down to Baylor & TCU in the fall of 1970 before the guys realized they better wake up & play the ball game?

Yep, that really happened.
How about VY at Kansas.

Sark says Watts injury was stinger type and he's day to day. That should mean he should be back for okie lite. But who knows.

The sky almost fell again. It turned out to be an acorn. If that's a loss there are torches in the street tonight.

Yes the way Sark recruits I think we’ll get the guys we need

That isn’t what PK does.  It’s what I think we should do.  His defense leaves a soft spot in the middle of the zone.  If you go back and look, most of their 3rd and long conversions were across the middle with a few outside underneath.  Zone coverage works when you’re good at pressuring the QB, which Texas is just ok at

Oh yes the middle is open. I just don’t like being two yards behind the receiver and he catches and we tackle him. Challenge the freaking catch. Get the hands in there and strip the ball loose. We didn’t challenge any throws today. Patterson did this as good as anyone in the country with alot less talent than we have. I was hoping he would instill some of that when he came here. I haven’t followed PK before he got here but for us to ever get with the top teams we have to develop that and quit making every single QB a Heisman Trophy candidate. It’s been happening for 12 years.

Pete K defense almost looks like we are playing a prevent.....like the guys said above me, too many ball caught in front of DB' and then relying on a tackle being made...Conventional thinking says you play a zone defense when you dont match up well, but I dont think we have any lock down cornerbacks and our safeties look like they are more worried about getting beat deep and letting to may balls caught against them...when your safeties are making tackles it usually means you are getting beat

Im irritated because we probably should have lost the game, for once we got a favorable call on the fumble but it easily been called the other way...This team sure didnt play with the same intensity as they did last week...

I honestly thought earlier in the week we had a legit chance to run the table....now I dont see that at all

The Big 12 is tough.  If Texas plays near perfect we can beat teams pretty soundly by a few TDs, but to expect it week over week just won’t be possible.   We aren’t that good at every position just yet.   We may get there but I expect more games likes this because teams will make us play ugly.

Iowa St is smartly coached and they don’t miss many tackles or assignments.

good to get this W.   Next week will be more of the same although we can improve upon many things.

Well we are 5-2. We beat OU 49-0. We will win at least 8 games this season. That’s with 2 freshman on the Oline, and and a freshman QB. We have freshman playing on defense too.
Iowa State has  been playing everybody tough. They have the best defense in the Conference.
Things are getting better, and I think everyone can see it. This team has a good chance to make some real noise next year. This year is gonna be a roller coaster.
We have had some lousy teams the past 10 years. But this team is better, and the future looks bright
