Man, all this talk about Longview brings back memories from early December in 1976. Sherman versus Longview (Hosea Taylor?) in Texas Stadium. Wife was pregnant and due in 2-3 weeks but got permission from the doc to attend the game. Sherman won 10-0 and then "lost" the next week to Temple in Texas Stadium. Sherman was up like 35-14 with about 4 minutes left and Temple scored 3 touchdowns to tie the game and advanced on penetrations. Wife got permission to go that game also. Son was born on December 30 sharing a birthday with Lebron James and Tiger Woods.Back in the late 60s and early 70s, a man by the name of Van Craddock was the sports editor at the Longview Morning Journal. Today, its the Longview News-Journal. I remember back then seeing Saturday morning sports sections that were 32 pages. Today, thats typically 6-8 pages.
Van Craddock is a legend for what he produced, for years, at the LMJ. Saturation coverage.
I did a short stint at the LNJ in my early years, worked for Sports editor John Inman and with Olin Buchanan there.
Yes, I think that was Hosea Taylor's Jr year. He was a monster, but Longview didn't have much offense.Man, all this talk about Longview brings back memories from early December in 1976. One more "did you know" thing about Sherman. In a 2 year span, 75 and 76, they did not lose a game and have nothing to show for it except for the one playoff win over Longview. Back then only one team from each district advanced to the playoffs and in 75 we tied Plano in district play and they advanced to the playoffs. Then in 76 we were undefeated again and, as described above, tied Temple in the 2nd round and lost out. Our QB went on to played for Arkansas and we had a DL and WR who went to UCLA.
The Tigers lead this series 2-1 with Daingerfield winning in consecutive years in 2008 and 2009 while en route to back-to-back state championship titles. Newton’s solo win came in the 1998 state championship game. Was Dangerfield Newton beat for their 2nd title. Year 1998.
