Happy New Year HS readers. As we begin anew I'd like to thank each and every one of you who reads our site and help drive me and the others to do what we do. This will be my third year covering recruiting for HS and I absolutely love what I do.
Here are a few last minute notes on what I'm hearing from those at the UA All-American Game
Devwah Whaley - I've had Whaley pegged to Texas for some time, and our sources are still confident. I was even told there have been indications from Whaley to people on the Texas side of things that he was planning to sign with the Longhorns. However, I will mention that I've spoken with others not on the Texas side of things that feel Arkansas is in the lead. Sources in Fayetteville mentioned to me that they would be very surprised if the top running back in the state didn't pick the Razorbacks. Basically both sides are confident for their programs and the consensus of the neutral people out there is that Arkansas holds a slight lead. The result of this is I found myself out on a limb among those out there picking Texas. Does that mean I'm backing out? Not exactly. My source on this has been very good this year and he's confident but he did mention that Whaley was on the fence about announcing, and regardless of who he picks he still plans on visiting Austin in January. I'm still going to go with Texas, but I think the most positive outcome would be to see Whaley push his announcement back and take his official to Austin before deciding.
Jean Delance - I'm going to stick with what I've been saying from the beginning on the big offensive tackle. Proximity to home and family direction will win out for Texas. There have been a lot of rumors surrounding Michigan surging into the lead this week, but it's well known that Delance's mother wants him close to home and absolutely loves the Texas staff. Like Whaley, I'm told Delance has indicated to others that Texas will be the choice. Michigan did a great job on his visit, but I think distance is going to be too big of a factor to overcome.
Eric Cuffee - Cuffee wanted to announce this weekend but didn't have a tv slot available. The feeling from just about everyone involved here is that Texas is way out in front for the Waco High product. Cuffee plays corner, but I actually think he could be a high end prospect at safety and in the nickel. While watching film this week it reminded me of a bigger version of Quandre Diggs who excelled in a nickel role. When Cuffee makes his announcement I would be very surprised if it wasn't for Texas.
Stay tuned for announcements tomorrow and check in with us throughout the day for stories on any recruiting movement that happens in Florida.
