Just left the scrimmage, I'll post some thoughts when I get to a computer. Imade looked good, I had to run so I didn't talk to him but he's really improved since I saw him in spring. More coming.

Ok guys here are some quick thoughts.

It was a good scrimmage, competitive with some nice hitting and intensity but at the end of the day it's still a scrimmage.  I can't wait for the lights to really come on next week.

Texas commit Tope Imade had a strong day.  He's really improved his technique and is also turning into a vocal leader on the sideline.  When I saw him in the spring he was very quiet and kept to himself on the sideline.  Today he was right in the middle of everything, firing his teammates up, and spending time between series with his coach trying to get better.  We've talked to him quite a bit recently so I left without an on the records interview but he did tell me he's working on North Mesquite Tackle Jean Delance and thinks the Longhorns have a strong shot at him.

One of my favorite qualities about Imade on the field is that he's a finisher.  He plays hard all the way to the whistle, and I counted five pancakes for the big man today.  His ability to move in space and work to the second level of the defense is teriffic.  It's one of the most difficult thing for a lineman to do, but Imade engages in space very well.  He can still use some work on his feet in run blocking, but he was much better than when I saw him in the spring.

I was excited to see Anthony Hines in pads, as I've really only seen him in a camp setting.  Physically, the junior linebacker is imposing built tall and thick.  His forward movement is fast and fluid as he came down hill multiple times and made some massive hits.  Once he gets his hands on as a tackler there is no getting away and he has an extra gear he can kick in when closing on a ball carrier.  One area that could stand to get better for Hines is his work in coverage.  He might still be growing into his big frame, but he struggled some when having to make plays on receivers in space.  During the controlled scrimmage portion he was pulled multiple times on obvious passing downs.  I'm not sure if that was for player rotation purposes, by design, or merely coincidence.  As I noted earlier, this was a scrimmage so some of these guys got less work than normal to keep them healthey and rested.  I'm really interested to see more of Hines this season when the lights come on.

Finally, i can't say enough good about Bowie's staff and their head coach Danny DeArmen.  Those guys are always incredibly welcoming and they coach with a passion and love for their players.  Bowie "lost" the scrimmage, and DeArmen put them right on the line for sprints after the game, and I heard no complaining or whining.  The players are driven to improve because they know the coaches care.  Bowie has some interesting pieces that were missing today with minor injuries.  If their young quarterback can figure things out they might be a dangerous team.

Great stuff, Mike. Thanks for going out there early this morning.

Based on your report and the fact that Hines has another 18 months of growing before getting to college, it sounds like he's destined for Mike/MLB.

I think he's a MLB all the way. I want to see him in live game action this year before I make more judgement.
