Burnt Ends (5-18)

Randolph, I can think of one stalwart who feels Dubai is a great idea. He shall remain anonymous as per respect for HS patrons.
Dubai is meaningless. The entirety of the UAE has an economy less that 20% of that of the state of Texas. Patterson would be FAR better off trying to mend relations with UT alumni than trying to market UT football to Dubai.

I don't have any personal animosity toward Steve Patterson. The entirety of my belief that he is unquestionably the wrong guy to head the UT athletics program is predicated on the painfully obvious fact that in 18 months he has utterly failed to deliver any "substantive and innovative" accomplishment. Not one. Steve Patterson has delivered no value above and beyond what any middle of the road candidate for the job of AD at any given mid-major would be able to deliver. Plain and simple, Patterson has failed to justify his $1.4 million/yr salary and he has failed to deliver meaningful change to Bellmont.

The bloat and financial irresponsibility inside Bellmont continues unchecked, yet Patterson asks more from the alumni. If the money is going to continue to be wasted on irresponsible spending, why give the money to Bellmont? If Patterson doesn't respect the donors by ensuring the money is responsibly managed, why donate?

After 18 months, anyone UT would have hired as AD would be expected to have delivered some meaningful accomplishment. Even the Steve Patterson apologists cannot point to anything Patterson has done that would constitute the foundation of a legacy. Plain and simple, Patterson has been a failure who has delivered squat. He has been a failure and those who care about UT athletics need to push for his removal. Patterson has failed. For the benefit of UT athletics, he needs to go.

18 months is without question sufficient time to pass judgment on his "leadership.' Plain and simple, Steve Patterson is a failure as AD at Texas. He may personally be a great guy, but as AD, he has been an abysmal failure.

HornSports Staff -

So how did you guys get Sirhornsalot to spill the beans about Patterson? He's usually tight-lipped about these kind of things.

I know little regarding Dubai, just saw the opportunity to throw a former stalwart under the bus.

Agree that marketing to the Dubais of the world seems silly. Making some money on merchandising in the Middle East vs fans at home enjoying our teams playing within driving distance is more appealing to the millions of fans here. Games in Mexico can suck it is well. My priorities are obviously different than our AD!

I don't know, playing a game in Dubai could be a positive perk for recruiting. An exciting trip for many kids who've never been anywhere. As for me though, I'd stay home and watch it on TV.

Could also make inroads in the recruiting hotbed of East Dubai and score some speedy dubainese highschool DBs.

Pretty weak Doc. You knew when you initially responded what the score was and went on a 10 point rebuttal. Duke, yours truly and most succinctly JimR countered you and now you're playing the 'I don't want to talk about it' card.

Perhaps you should have sat it out altogether.
Were my opinions supposed to be debated?  I stated my opinions and pointed out why.  They were what I believe, backed up with what I know.  Why is this weak and why should I have to repeat it?  Randy didn't like my opinions and tried to debunk them.  That is his privilege, no matter how wrong he is.

Do you think me arguing with him will change his mind?

I will say this.  He doesn't know the man and neither does anyone else, nor does he know what goes on behind the scenes.  And, all he has done is twist SP's performance to fit his agenda.

A classic example:

"It wasn't Pattersons decision to fire Mack."  Um, no kidding.  No one has said it was.  His job was to perform that duty - something Luck wanted no part of.

See how he has twisted what I said to fit his agenda?

So it's pointless to argue with him on an objective basis.  He ain't gonna do it.

you've said this a couple of times and I don't see the relevance. I don't KNOW Obama, Perry or a single US senator but it doesn't keep me from having opinions on their job performance.

As to agenda's, everybody has one. Earlier, you stated opposition to SP was coming from those who are 'brainwashed'. Really? Maybe there's just honest disagreement or disapproval.

Evidently, you're part of many msg boards. I'd be curious if you read the most recent Big Cigar and if so, what your take was.

Let's play a "what if" scenario.

What if, on the recruiting trail, aggy told a prospect that they had an OOC game scheduled in Mexico City against Washington one year and against ASU in the UK the next year?  UT, on the other hand, told the same prospect that they had a home game scheduled against Rice one year and against CU in Colorado the next year.

Which scenario would the 17 year old, Tyler, Texas recruit be more impressed with?  Which program would he think is the most "big time", in the state of Texas?

Which recruiting tool would either Sumlin or Strong prefer?  Which one do you think they would jump on and run with?

Why do these kinds of things have to be explained and pointed out?

Texas is #1 in the nation as a money generator.  What is the argument against it being #1 in the world?  Exposure of the brand fuels want.  Ka ching, Ka ching, Kaching!

ND is a world wide brand - why can't UT be the same?

On another note and on the other site, dumbasses are actually saying - "Oh yeah, lets see how many recruits we get out of Mexico city - for soccer, maybe.".  Can you believe there are those that are that obtuse?  These jokers were serious, my friends.

Posters on this site are far more intelligent than to make those kinds of ridiculous comments.

How Mack pulled in top-5 recruiting classes without playing abroad is one of life's mysteries.

Me? I'd rather go to Colorado, but if Texas plays some scrub in Mexico City as a one-off, fine. I don't see it as the legacy defining moment for Patterson some do. And if it comes at the expense of losing a big-time home game in Austin, to hell with it.

The message board dynamic re ADs is interesting. people crushed 'DeLo$$' for only caring about money. Now some are celebrating SP for being Deloss on steroids.

I can personally confirm that 3/4 of the Athletic Dept spends 110 % of their time, every day, including weekends on the game in Mexico City. They each have to spend an equal amount of time in Berlitz Classes so we don't look like asses when we're there. Only Mexican food is allowed in the Athletic offices now and pay toilets have been installed in the offices due to an unexplained recent large uptick in usage. The hope is athletic Dept employees will wake up, get off the pot and get this inevitability done.

Jeeeeeez People!

Maybe a good movie everyone here should watch this weekend is "Now you See Me."

Pay toilets = New revenue stream = Steve Patterson is a genius

And what did Mack do with his top five classes. He did less with more than any other coach I can recall.

that wasn't the point, but he won a NC, played for another, shoulda player for a 3rd in 08, won a Rose Bowl in 04, finished top-5 in 01 for starters.
Again, the point was recruiting can survive w/o trips to Boystown, Mex, not anything about Mack.

ND is a "worldwide brand" because every Catholic domestically and abroad who didn't go to a big-time CFB school roots for them. Well, that and NBC has been broadcasting every home game nationally for - what - two decades now? The Irish are a slice of Americana

I have been called out as making a weak reply to an individual that is not really interested in my position - which is partially supported by facts and partially my opinions. Nay, his sole purpose is to debunk it all.

Because I like both individuals I will make this last reply.

I'm not in the mood to get into an extended debate at the moment, but i will respond.

1) The argument that save and except for Steve Patterson, Mack Brown would still be head football coach at UT is a non-starter. The program's decline at the end of his tenure is what got rid of Mack Brown.

Calling it a "non-starter": is meaningless and not applicable to my contention.  And that is he got rid of Mack - which he was hired to do.

2) For all he has done, Charlie Strong has not delivered results on the field as of yet. Patterson certainly gets no credit for hiring a coach that to date hasn't even delivered a winning season. Bob Weltlich was also an assistant that won a championship at a major program (the '76 32-0 Indiana team), did well leading a mid major and came to Texas, instilling a discipline oriented approach.

Patterson absolutely gets credit for hiring Strong.  which, for the majority of the UT fans, admins and bmd's was a home run hire.

3) And he also gave him a contract extension just 5 months before firing him. Not much of a visionary when it comes to evaluating coaches, is he?

Your speculation of his vision smacks a little of being a little snarky.  He got rid of him - end of story.

4) Patterson wants to be lauded for money whipping an obvious coaching hire who hasn't even won a game yet? A bit early, % would say.

Once again, you are in the minute minority on this hire - which was lauded, by those in the know, as another home run hire.

5) Polling season ticket holders is your idea of "substantive and innovative change?!" Is asking people whether they want to spend $2,800 for a tailgaiting spot and a few bags of ice for a single game substantive or innovative?

Yes, I would say it was substantive and innovative.  Changes were made, as a result, and Dodds sure wasn't that innovative, was he?  Your rebuttals are beginning to be even more snarky now.

6) Again, is telling aggy "no" substantive or innovative? As I remember, that has been the company line since before Patterson was even AD at Arizona State.

In my book it damn sure was.  But maybe you are more of an aggy fan than me.  What the company line was before Patterson was hired is irrelevant to Pattersons position for UT today.  Red herring.

7) So what!? Does anyone really think Dubai is is a brilliant marketing move? Seriously, Dubai!?

Anyone that is innovative and forward thinking, yes.  Obviously sales and marketing are not your expertise.

8) "Closed the behind the scenes pipeline." You must be kidding. That is Patterson's signature "substantive and innovative" achievement after 18 months on the job and pulling down $1.4 mil/year?! We hired Patterson to "close down a pipeline?!"

It damn sure is part of it.  Where were you when the Saban debacle occurred?  And you need to tap the brakes on the snark and sarcasm.

9) The BMD are the ONLY people who have any influence over the athletic department. He is kissing the asses of the 30,000 west side season ticket holders and giving the finger to the other 450,000 alumni precisely because he wants the BMDs to finance the $1.2 billion wish list he has drawn up. That crap about "ticket prices only being raised an average of 6%" was an insult to the intelligence of the rank and file alumni. He certainly hasn't delivered anything "substantive and innovative" to enhance the gameday atmosphere for the rank and file alumni, yet the BMDs are catered to without reservation.

I'm very good friends with a few BMD's and you are patently wrong with how much influence they have over the AD.  Now, if they are polled or invited to participate is another story.  I see now where your angst comes from (I'm betting, however, you aren't even a season ticket holder).  You object to ticket increases from where they were 30 years ago.

10) No, he hasn't. For a year and a half we have been hearing excuse after excuse about why Steve Patterson has utterly failed to install responsible management over Bellmont's spending. "It's coming any day!" "The people inside Bellmont are scared!" Bullshit. Patterson ran UT athletics at a loss last year for the first time in decades. He has more revenue than any program in college sports and he can't make ends meet. Every other athletic director in the nation finds a way to get by with less than Patterson.  He has raised the price of everything he can think of. "Expenses not allocated to any specific program" is where the bloat is in the financial reports.  My two question to Steve Patterson are what expense-per-athlete figure he thinks would reflect responsible management of Bellmont's finances and when does he intend to get Bellmont to that figure. In reigning in the waste and bloat that is rampant inside Bellmont, Patterson has been inept and a failure, certainly not "substantive and innovative."

Please link where you have been hearing excuse after excuse.  I suspect this bilge probably came from another message board - right?  I'm, also, betting I know more about what is happening inside Bellmont than you do.  You are simply wrong and I will leave it at that.  By-the-way, you are now in full roar with your condescension, sarcasm and snark.  all based on ignorance, I might add.

Bottom line - after 18 months, Patterson has failed to deliver one substantive or innovative accomplishment that would justify his having been selected as AD or anything that stands as a "substantive and innovative" signature achievement. The president of the United States can be judged on his first 100 days in office, but  after 18 months the athletic director of UT needs "understanding and patience because of the complexity of his job." A lot of people wanted to support Patterson as he took over the program. A lot of people were wanting him to deliver substantive and innovative change. Patterson has delivered nothing for the overwhelming majority of UT fans and alumni and a lot of people have quite believing Patterson has the ability to deliver what was promised.
This is a message board and your opinion has the same value as mine.  You are not, however, entitled to create propaganda and unsupported fantasies as fact, and/or speak for the rest of us:

"Patterson has delivered nothing for the overwhelming majority of UT fans and alumni and a lot of people have quite believing Patterson has the ability to deliver what was promised."

Propaganda, opinion and personal creation expressed as a fact.

"Patterson has been inept and a failure, certainly not "substantive and innovative."

This is just your uneducated opinion and most definitely not a consensus

Look, I'll say it again - I'm not here to advocate for SP.  I'm just not a fan of one sided hit pieces that I know are based on ignorance and personal prejudice. I feel the same about Patterson as I do about Swoopes.  Hysterical bashing lacks objectivity and doesn't tell or reveal the whole story.

Besides, I suspect the bashers generally constitute those individuals that didn't like or didn't want them from the very beginning  - Swoopes, Strong, Wickline, Patterson, Smart, ad nauseam.  They had other people they wanted instead.

No man is perfect and I am aware that SP isn't either.  He most certainly may fail at UT, but, so far IMO and the administration, he appears to be doing exactly what he was hired to do.

Randy was eviscerated, by a couple of blogs and posters, for his very good piece about the "12th man".  I absolutely felt that was unfair, particularly in light of the extensive research he did.  And I supported his view 100% because it was contrary to what the general consensus was at A&M and other places.  It gave us another side to consider.

I would hope that Randy and the other Patterson, et al, bashers would take this position as well.

And, StreettoPechel, you are right about my usage of the word agenda.  I bastardized it and I stand corrected.  In fact, the actual person with an agenda is Steve Patterson and he appears to be implementing it.

Disagreeing with the implementation of new policy or policies isn't automatically 'bashing'.

Yes Steve has an agenda. Whether we agree with his agenda or not (I don't), my opinion is he's done a piss-poor job of selling it. If that's a bash, so be it.

You are quite right - disagreeing is within all of our rights.  Calling him a douche, stupid, moron, etc., etc. is bashing.

Creating unsupported propaganda is bashing.  Expressing a negative opinion as fact is bashing.

It appears what you dislike about him is the raising of ticket prices - am I correct?

I say this, because beyond this what could you possibly have?
