Any suggestions for a new baseball coach?

I love everything Augie's done for UT for years, but it's time to start thinking about a new head baseball coach.  I haven't stayed current on who's doing a good job.  Who does Patterson need to be looking at, and realistically, who's available that might be interested in the UT job if Augie retires or is gently pushed into that good night?

If Augie retires so be it, but he's not a coach you fire unless he misses the tournament for a few years in a row. Just last year he was a couple outs away from having us in the national title series.

I understand expectations but you aren't going to find another coach that's gonna get you to the CWS 8 out of 18 years, and win 2 titles.

Augie's not the type of coach I would fire unless it's for sure he's washed up. I would give him a long leash even if the risk is maybe keeping him a year too long.

I agree. We're all disappointed in how this season is going but it's not over yet. Augie is not the problem with this team. He's the best coach in the game and that hasn't changed. He approaches the game the same way year after year and it's up to the players to buy in.

Augie will be given ample opportunity to retire on his own timeline. He is a legend. While many think he is over the hill or out of touch, the problems with the team of late, in my opinion, are not because of Augie.

To your question about coaches, I think Skip Johnson gets the keys to the car when Augie retires, as he should. There should not be a search, no consulting firm, it should be given to Skip.

Jeff, I am by no means an expert on baseball and do not know how motivation works into the play on the field.  Obviously in football and basketball a large part of the equation relates to how well the team is motivated.  My question does this same thing apply to baseball?

All I know is that this team couldn't/can't hit its way out of a paper bag.

The scary thing is how similar the baseball season is mirroring the basketball season. Star out good then start to flop.

It's a tough call for sure.

I'm sure I'll get blasted for this, but IMHO, finishing last in the conference should be automatic grounds for dismissal. So he should have been let go 2 or 3 years ago whenever that happened. That's inexcusable.

Any Suggestons for a New Baseball Coach??

nope none... When Augie steps down/retires after the '17 season, Skip Johnson will be given the full reigns. Right now Skip makes a lot of the decisions with Augies input.

With Skip and Nicholson you have a recruiting machine, the talent is there, The coaches are just trying to figure out which piece of the puzzle fits where.

This is a young team but it is a team that takes losing seriously. Players like CJ, Marlow, French and Shaw needs to step up and take the bull by the horns and lead this team...

If the baseball team is underperforming to the point that you have a "New Baseball Coach" thread, and it is stated that Skip Johnson is calling most of the shots, isn't this an indictment on Johnson as well as Augie?  If past history is any indication of the future, I'd bet that Patterson would be inclined to clean house and go outside for the new coach.

Patterson just re-upped Augie last year, correct? I'd give him at least one more year.

We're already $10MM in the hole

it's a depressing stage we're in to be sure. i'd guess regardless how this season finishes, Augie's back next year unless he decides on his own he's had enough. a series win against ou this weekend would do wonders for our collective attitude.

The problem with college baseball is that the best pitchers, hitters and fielders all go to pro ball straight from high school.

IMO, UT should heavily scout the Junior colleges.  This is where good ball players are developed.

We will never get the best ones out of high school and neither will the other major colleges.

Barnes also got an extension last year and a healthy buyout. Augie had a great run last year, hopefully can turn it around this season and next season as well. I would hate to see Skip bolt for a HC job if Augie sticks around for a few more seasons, but he is a proven winner over DECADES!!! Hope he can right the ship.
