However that does not necessarily mean as a starter!

Good quotes from Strong today in down in Houston...

"I hope he's (Swoopes) been watching that tape wondering what the hell happened," Strong said. "He just can't turn the ball over. He's so hard on himself that it's almost like you've got to get him out of the jar. You've got to come back, Tyrone. There was a really bad game, but you've got to look at it, too. Whenever the stage is set, you have to go perform on that stage, and he didn't perform that night because everything was in line. You had a national audience. You had a top-five team. You can't turn the football over. That cannot happen."

"He's got my full support because of the way we're looking at it right now is we've got to go out and recruit, get better, make sure we develop what we have, let him develop, and see where he is," Strong said. "He has it. We just have to make sure. We've got to be smart about what we do with him and how we go out and recruit."

"It's going to be open competition (in 2015)," Strong said. "That's going to happen. He's going to have to play a lot better."

Those quotes were from various sources, here is a write up by the statesman... http://longhorns.blog.statesman.com/2014/12/09/charlie-strong-on-qb-tyrone-swoopes-hes-got-my-full-support/

I really like how CS does not candy coat it. You perform or you don't and we will move on when we have someone that will. I will support you, but that does not mean I will make you a starter.

We are headed in the right direction guys!!

Right now that's all Strong is able to say. There is no other QB at this point of the season.

I think Strong understands that at this point Swoopes is either going to grow a pair or not. He has the arm and athletic capabilities. He has even shown some smarts from time to time. However he is going to have to learn to get over a mistake so it does not turn into several.

Here is what I think about Swoopes right now:

We can't trust him.
The fans sure don't trust him and privately CS and the coaches don't trust him either, but they have no choice but to support him right now.  Re: the quote, I like that CS didn't clap, clap for TS and talk nice about what a good kid he is, he has good family, he is trying hard, etc. BS.   CS basically complimented him - he has the tools / ability, but he MUST step up or else, etc... that is exactly the kind of language needed.

I'm sure he is a great guy BUT you would have to be brain dead if you think he is a DI type player. He should move on to SFA OR SAM HOUSTON---he "may" do well.  If he is our QB in Sept - you can count on 5-7 losses !

Swoopes as the Horns starting (or even 1st backup) would not sit well with me next Fall.

It's the last game of the year. If Swoopes gets hurt we put in the walk on.

Watson should open up the playbook. Tell swoopes to run with the ball whenever he wants on the zone reads. Hold nothing back.
We should've put in the walk-on, Vinklarek, in Q4 of the Texas Bowl.

He couldn't do any worse and the game was already over. It would've given us a look to see if he offers anything tangible at QB. Instead we closed out another shit-show with Ty. Who knows? Maybe Vinlarek is another Baker Mayfield?

Exactly.

Strong says Swoopes has his full support and will have it during the time he is out trying to find someone to replace him. :)

What is disturbing to me is why Strong rarely talks about Heard.

At this point (1-7-2015) Strong has Swoopes AND Heard with Gentry and Merrick on the way. So, considering Strongs belief in shirting freshmen, I can understand why he thinks he needs a JUCO or a transfer for depth next year.  Makes sense, doesn't it?

Your right, it is disturbing why Strong rarely or never talks about Heard!?

He knows Swoopes is not a winning hand so, right now, Heard MAY be his only potential "starter" going into spring.

So he has to consider / go after a good JUCO or transfer QB.

Hell I would if I was him.

After seeing Charlie after the bowl game, I would say that while Swoopes may have his support as a person, it is very unlikely that he has any trust left.

I tried to support Swoopes for much of the year, because of his experience and coming from a small school. However it became quite clear after the last two games, he just is not improving in the main area he needs and that is confidence.

I will never say that anything is not possible, but I would put Swoopes becoming a quality D1 QB as close as possible to it.

I see a quote like this: ""It's going to be open competition (in 2015)," Strong said. "That's going to happen. He's going to have to play a lot better."

Why would Swoopes have to play better if he's already better than the competition Charlie talks about? Unless some of that competition is better than Swoopes?

Yea, Swoopes will have to play better because Heard's going to be better and already is.

There was really no reason to talk about Heard. No reason to put any un-due pressure on Heard if they weren't going to burn the shirt.

It would be silly not to expect Heard to be better.  He will have a year of college competition and coaching behind him.  The concern would be if he wasn't better.  But it would be just as silly not to expect Swoopes to get better as well.

As Strong has said, competition should bring out the best in them and if Heard can beat out an experienced and tested QB, that is all the better for UT.  But it is going to be a tough hill for him to climb, IMO.

It would be in the best interests of our beloved Longhorns for Heard to perform like he did in high school.  My fear is the UT fan base will fall on him like a pack of wolves if he doesn't.  That would be totally unfair, but it is a trait we are well known for.  We have a track record.

Since Shawn Robinson and Heard are close, if Heard's lack of development are true, would that affect Texas' chance at landing Robinson?

Agree.

Not if he's not really a QB. I would "hope" he would get better and "hope" I never have to really find out.

I don't think it will be tough for him to be better than Swoopes. He'll have a tougher time against Gentry, IMO. But as you say, Heard's got a year in the system so my expectations of Heard will be greater than that of Gentry.

I'd just like to see him given a shot. We no longer have the luxury of not doing that. It SHOULD have started in the bowl practices.
