before I leave for the day

games are different than recruiting days. the only one that, to me, compares to today is Simms switch to the real UT.
Oh, no kidding. That came out of nowhere. I don't think my feet touched the ground that day.

I'm sorry Jim, but I just don't think I can fully celebrate yesterday without a Keep Calm picture.  Got any of these laying around?
Just look for the guy who's interrupting recruiting threads with facilities questions. He's hit just about every site now.

i thought about it and see no similarity between the 2.

we tend to focus on what Simms wasn't instead of what he was. as a SR he threw for 26 tds and 3200 yards. we went 11-2 and finished #6. I'll go out on a limb and say Swoopes never sniffs numbers like that.
Dementia is a terrible thing.  When I was talking about Simms, I was thinking of Gilbert.  How embarrassing.

Totally different QBs - Gilbert and Simms.

But even though it was completely off topic, you will have to admit - Swoopes and Gilbert are almost clones.

Jesus!

IMO, you never saw Gilbert coming. He was a system QB and flopped when he got to Texas. But there were a lot of reasons to think he would be a star.

Swoopes had no system, played in a low profile small school, and was about as raw as a recruitable QB could be.

:D

I only laugh because I have had bigger brain farts. . .

but I will say this. . .everyone knew Swoopes was an uber talented project. . .everyone also expect GG to ride in ready to win Heisman's. . .

Shevis,

Sent you a text, glad to see you posting. . . .

Lol Doc. No problem. i never play golf without at least one mulligan. if you hit one OB, it's OK to tee it up again.

I remember like it was yesterday getting the news from Jerry Scarbrough that Simms had switched to Texas.

If I had stashed away the coin I spent on Jerry's 900 line I would have retired years ago.

That one turned out just fine.
Yeah, I guess you're right.

I tend to obsess over his miserable performance in the 2001 Big12 Championship at Texas Stadium. Egad, that was ugly. Plus, I was always very pro-Applewhite.

Simms had a decent career and was certainly better than most CFB quarterbacks.

If you think about it, Simms was the white equivalent to Swoops.  Both great kids, intelligent and with unique and God given tools for being a QB.

Unfortunately, both of them were/are very immature and were/are unable to adapt to big time college football at a school like Texas.

I think both would have been better served to play at schools like Sam Houston, S.F. Austin and maybe UTSA.  Where they wouldn't be under such a pressure packed microscope and would have time to grow up without have their confidence crushed.
this may be the most insane thing I have read here not written by monarch. total, utter BS.

ETA: should have read the entire thread before posting, but I was apoplectic. I could not believe it but now understand.

the team picked Simms over Applewhite and sent an emissary to MB to tell him so. Applewhite is a prick now and was a prick then.

As I recall, aggy used to call him Major Asswhipe

(apologies to the sensitive)

Good grief...the HC lets the inmates run the asylum on who's quarterbacking the team. We deserved to get owned in the Big12 Championship game with that kinda leadership. That's weak.

Many successful QBs have been described as a "prick" by teammates. You'd probably see Marino, Brady, P. Manning, among others, on that list. Michael Jordan was a prick, too.

ain't working, JB. self-absorbed prick who screwed a student while he was a coach and got away with it. glad he is someone else's jerk.

What I do remember is that when the going got real tough, Simms couldn't get the job done, but Applewhite did. The team played better with Major than Simms.

Reminds me that Bobby Layne was a real prick as well....at least to people who underperformed. Sometimes a QB needs to be a bit that way to be effective.

I have never forgotten the "deer in the headlights" look Simms had against OU.

whatever. his team did not think so. did he "get it done" at the Alamodome? against KSU at DKR. cultists believe he never lost a game.

I did not realize you watched games from the field and gazed into players eyes.

screwed a student, bcherry. while a coach. I guess he got that done, ok.

Through the miracle of close-up camera shots, we've seen that "deer in a headlights" look from Simms and Swoopes. But, my favorite scared/confused QB was Warren Moon. Buffalo in '92 was exhibit A.
