Thoughts on the current state of recruiting

Today hasn't been the best day for fans of Longhorn recruiting, and I'm sure it's been a bad day for the coaching staff as well.  While meltdowns in recruiting are quite common and warranted at times I wanted to hit you guys with some thoughts I was spinning around in my head.

1. The loss of Toby Weathersby was a big one.  Weathersby was one of the bona fide blue chip recruits this class had.  The signs have been there for a while, but it appears as if Weathersby was holding this offer as insurance against an injury only to jump to another school.  If that is the case and Texas finds themselves in that position, it's time to change something drastically.

2. Not winning the committment of Darrin Kirkland Jr., while disappointing shouldn't be a huge indictment of this staff.  He would have been a great victory, and the staff will have to start winning some of these battles, but this was clearly a case of familiarity with the Tennessee staff coupled with proximity to his home.  By all accounts Texas really impressed Kirkland on his official visit, and were in the game late but couldn't close it out.  It happens a lot in recruiting national talent but the staff will have to start winning some of these battles.  While it feels good to gain ground like that, second place is the first loser.

3. All signs point to Malik Jefferson committing to Texas A&M.  I think anyone following this closely has seen that.  Remarkable job by the staff to get back in on this recruitment after it was dead in the water a year ago, but this will be another place where they come up short.  There are a number of reasons you can use as excuses for this, but the bottom line is Texas needs to start winning in state for the top recruits to get back to where they want to go.

4. While the loss of Jordan Stevenson was puzzling, I don't see it as a huge loss talent wise.  I've seen Stevenson live and frankly was underwhelmed by his lack of explosive ability.  It always hurts perception wise, but the Longhorns have a big chance to upgrade at that position with Chris Warren which brings me to my next point.

5. While the timing of these events looks bad for the coaching staff, if we examine each situation in a vacuum we can really get a look at each recruitment and how to fix or repair it.

Weathersby - There is no way to replace Weathersby right now.  While Texas has a deep incoming offensive line class, no one has the top end talent that Weathersby does.  Patrick Vahe might come close, and Connor Williams and Ronnie Major may have higher ceilings, but Weathersby was the jewel of the line class.

Jefferson - There is no way to replace not getting the top player in the state and top outside linebacker in the nation.  The Kirkland win would have helped, but Texas has to figure out something at that position because Townsend and Hager aren't enough to get it done.

Stevenson - As I mentioned, the possible committments of Chris Warren or Nick Brosette are clear upgrades at this position.  Neither have the speed of Stevenson, but I believe both are better players.

Kirkland - While losing Kirkland stings, Texas would really have to mess things up to not get Cecil Cherry at this point.  While Cherry isn't as highly rated (mostly due to height) he's got a ton of talent and will be a very nice consolation prize.

John Burt - The writing has been on the wall regarding this one for a long time as well.  Texas took a big WR class last year and have the chance to get Ryan Newsome this season to go along with the 2016 committments of Reggie Hemphill and Colin Johnson.  However, with an offense in need of talent losing a big time national player with the skills Burt has would hurt.  Texas must win that recruitment or formulate a backup plan.

Other - I think Texas has a chance to close with Cecil Cherry, Devonaire Clarington, Chris Clark, Tim Irvin, Davante Davis, Kris Boyd, and Holton Hill.  I don't believe they get that entire haul but they have a chance with each of those guys.  3 or 4 would go a long way since they are all national blue chip type recruits.

6. Yes this staff has been known for development, but the overwhelming research shows that better talent equals better production.  While I've just outlined a way for the coaching staff to salvage this class they simply must get better in this department.  They also need to be on red alert for any other possible defections.  Deshon Elliott has taken some visits as well as Du'Vonta Lampkin.  Protect your own home and make sure these kids are locked in.

7. This staff was criticized from the beginning as lacking ace recruiters.  I think at this point it's a fair criticism and shows some weaknesses at key points.  From what I can see Bruce Chambers and Les Koenning aren't making big impacts in recruiting.  Chris Rumph and Brian Jean-Mary are better but not great, while the stars may be Chris Vaughn and Tommie Robinson.  Chambers has long outlived his usefulness and could be ushered out to bring in a top recruiter.  This may be something for Charlie Strong to look at.

8. Bottom line, let's see what this class looks like on signing day.  It sucks right now but it can get better.

Nice write up, Mike. You make a lot of sense.

Unfortunately I have to agree with every point. Great write up!

I appreciate the approach Strong is taking in that he does not simply write off a recruit because he seems to be pointed towards a certain school, actually I love it as it goes directly to the type of person CS is. He is not going to back down. I do think this will pay benefits in the future as he will start to reel some of these guys in.

The hard part right now with CS being the new coach here is he does not have the relationships that some of the others have with the recruits, that have been built since they were sophomores in HS. Not to mention fighting the perception of Texas that many have over the last 4+ years. Then you have some recruits that may be nervous about Charlies tough love approach. And let's face it, the Big12 just does not have much sex appeal right now.

I'll admit those are all excuses, but I think they are pretty legitimate. If Charlie can right the ship and Texas starts to make noise again, the recruiting will start to turn.

Could a bigger splash have gotten a quicker turn around in recruiting? Maybe, but I still believe that Charlie can build this for the long term success. However that only works, if Texas can show improvement over the next 2 seasons.

Charlie has had a full year to catch up with these recruits. That should have been long enough at least with some of the top talent. If we don't close well then I am going to have my doubts going forward as to his recruiting abilities.

If he doesn't get rid of Chambers and bring in some one better that is also a failure. Hope he does so.

There was a thread last June where people were making predictions for the upcoming season where I was accused of being a troll because I said the Horns would go 6-6, Toby Weathersby was going to decommit (I saw him flipping to aggy) and that we would lost at least one other top commit in the class. Too many people are looking to Charlie Strong to fix all the problems with the football program. My biggest concern is we have the right coach but he is being set up for failure because the rest of the athletic department was inept and incompetent.

This last season, texas failed to sell out at least one home game for the first time since 1993. The North Texas game was the lowest ticket sales since the stadium was expanded in 2008. Attendance was bad last year. The game day atmosphere is badly in need of changes. The image of UT football in general trails that of other regional programs. INow recruits are giving a vote of no confidence to the offer of being part of the Texas experience. I can't say that I entirely blame them.

At some point, Patterson has to start doing his part and deliver on the Disney consultant promises and other matters be has been talking about for the past year. Patterson also needs to get the media and marketing staff off their dead lazy asses or replace them. Patterson is well into his second year on the job after essentially red-shirting his first year so he could "grow into the job." Expecting Charlie Strong to do everything by himself is a recipe for failure. The thought that Kevin Sumlin is so brutally beating Charlie Strong in recruiting that he can land the top defensive player in the state without even having a defensive coordinator on his staff is unbelievable. There are a lot of people on the payroll at UT who need to be part of solving the problems. It can't be up to just Charlie Strong to right the ship. The problems are a lot more deep seated and they aren't related to Coach Strong's approach of expecting his athletes grow up, stay out of trouble and get an education.

Totally agree Randolf. The issues are much deeper than just CS.

These kids see them as well. When they are visiting games and different facilities, they have to be a bit shocked at what they see here.

I think CS is doing and "OK" job and as mentioned I love that he is fighting for guys Mack would have left behind, but that is not enough. Part of it is on him as well since his staff is not known as recruiting geniuses as well.

Nicely done sir.

While I'm not going to judge Charlie too hard for this year since he hasn't even been here a full year yet, he has to do a better job within the state next year. One of the coaches I was hoping Charile would keep was Darrell Wyatt since I heard he was a recruiting guru here in Texas, especially in the DFW area.

I don't fault the opinion of those who believe CS should be bringing in top notch recruits for the 2015 class. However, the key to recruiting is relationships and results on the field. CS hasn't had time to produce either. The teams we are recruiting against have had more time to develop relationships with recruits than Charlie has. If the 2016 class isn't a top 10 or even top 5 class, then yes UT fans have every right to freak out about the state of recruiting. One good season changes everything. It will happen, keep the faith brothers.

The expectations that some have of what Coach Strong and his staff should be accomplishing on the field and in recruiting are not realistic.  This isn't 1999 when Mack Brown cashed in on a successful 1998 season where Ricky Williams won the Heisman and the Horns knocked off Miss State in the Cotton Bowl.  The landscape in the state is totally different with A&M joining the SEC and TCU and Baylor being prominent nationally.

I believe what CS has accomplished to this point is actually beyond where it should be.  The days of walking into a recruits home and stating "we are Texas" doesn't cut it anymore b/c the recruit has plenty of high level programs within the state he can play for.  Applying absolutes to the type of staff UT has based on limited information and results just isn't fair based on what the staff had to work with this year and trying to convince a recruit that joining a 6-6 program is the way to go.

I truly believe patience will be rewarded and this will be a program that produces a consistent winner in the future.

I couldnt agree more.  Charlie is a great guy and coach but he cant do it all by himself.  Time to move Chambers out and bring in an Ace recruiter.

Alabama reaps 5 star recruits nationwide with ease.  So it can still be done.

I agree with all the points in Mike's post.  However, I am not as concerned about MJ.  After reading about his family, and his faith, I really think his decision will go along the same lines as Earl's did.  I think he will pray about it and it will come down to whether or not he has to pee in the middle of the night or not, at least something along those lines.  That is just my gut feeling.

Its more than just replacing Chambers. Bellmont needs a total upgrade of attitude. The Horns have what I believe to be a really high quality coach and in Rhanda Ryan a high quality academic advisor. Coach Strong's system won't work without a strong academic advisor. Strong will promise parents he will make a difference in their son's lives and he absolutely cannot succeed without a solid academic advisory team. Patterson should be working with Ryan to identify and develop tbe next generation of young professionals who can build on what she has done and work to make the 1000 APR goal as financially important to the academic staff as important as competing for a national championship is to the football staff. Being a consistent 1000 APR program would give Coach Strong a recruiting advantage that can't be overstated.

Patterson is, by all accounts, a quality facilities guy. He is incredibly weak when it comes to marketing and media. Why can't Texas attract a strong candidate to handle marketing and media. If Patterson was able to bring in someone who could repair and then build the image of UT football in the media, it would help Coach Strong immensely. That same goes for someone who could manage the game day experience.

Patterson needs to make a lot of changes to build a team around Coach Strong that puts him in a position to succeed. Expecting Coach Strong to do it all by himself and to make up for the weaknesses UT has in so many areas inside Bellmont is not going to put the program where it could be.

Agree RD. I hear BMDs are having buyer's remorse with Patterson. He may end up being a short timer. When both Luck and Patterson were in the same room, the differences were obvious. But BOR is the priority right now I hear.

Please explain what you mean by the board of regents being the priority now.

There are a few members who are, I'm told, not UT-friendly or don't always have our best interests at heart. It's my understanding that our new Gov is going to get involved in the house cleaning and will help insert new, burnt orange blood, into the BOR.
