I recommend the following next steps

1. Petition the NCAA for a Waiver - We'd really like to stay at 10 members if possible, and current NCAA rules don't allow us to hold a Big12 Championship game. We need one to impress the CFB Playoff committe and get to 13 games. Yes, BU vs K-State should've been the de facto CCG this year.  TCU's scintillating win over Iowa State didn't impress anyone.

2. Add Two "Football Only" Members - NCAA turns us down?  Add BYU and Boise State for football only.  Not really a tough decision - they're the best programs available.  Put them in a North Division with KU, K-State, ISU, & WVU.  Pretty good TV inventory for FOX and ESPN, too.  BYU vs K-State?  WVU vs BSU?  Yes, please

Yes, unless the Big12 were divided into 5-team North & South divisions.  A rematch between TCU and BU would've been fun TV.  A win definitely would've given either a boost, too, but I still doubt either gets selected over tOSU.

what will change the perception of the big 12 and big 10(perceived to be the 2 weaker leagues not counting UT/Ou in good years): schedule and beat the big boys. 

Ok St gave FSU a very good game

WV hung with Bama

KSt should have beaten Auburn

Wisconsin had Lsu on the ropes. 

Texas should have beaten UCLA

Mich St was there for a half with Oregon b4 they showed who is better. 

TT got blown out by Arky, Ku got killed by Duke, Texas got embarrassed by Byu. 

Was the Big12s biggest non conf win Ou over Tennessee or Tcu over Minnesota. Thats just not gonna cut it. 

Scheduling SMU, NW st and Buffalo gives you no argument. Its nice to beat Minnesota/Tenn but if your top teams don't schedule at least mid level teams and win you should get left out. I agree tOsu did the same thing, they scheduled below avg and lost to VT. IF they got left out they would have had no right to complain either. 

Every year at least 1 of not 2 conferences will get left out. Thankfully SEC didn't squeal their way into getting 2 teams in.

I would certainly not divide the conference into two divisions as long as you were playing a round robin against nine other teams.

For short-term perception's sake, the conference really needs TCU, Baylor, and KSU to handle their business in bowl games.

Baylor v MichStU

KSU v UCLA

Additionally, all the national media are talking about brand/perception. tOSU v Baylor is the equivalent of Texas v Illinois. For some reason nobody is mentioning that the team that won out happened to be one of the Top 10 brands in CFB.

It's not like Baylor and TCU were beat out by a mid-tier Power 5 team.

True, but what if Vandy lost a SEC East game to UGA or UF, lost a tie-breaker, and didn't beat Bama in the CCG?  11-1 up against a 12-1 tOSU?

My money is on tOSU getting in.

That is true, but in that case, there would be more attractive teams to take out of the SEC, like Alabama, or the team Vandy lost the SEC-E tiebreaker to.  In the Big12, Baylor and TCU were the most attractive, and yet didn't make the cut.  Additionally, if Vandy were ever in that position, the SEC marketing machine would make sure that they got a fair shot.

They didn't make the cut because they're both small, private schools like Vandy.  Not because of any perceived Big12 inadequacies.

Exactly. SEC very smartly took control of their conference bowl assignments and in doing so gave themselves the opportunity to make the most favorable matchups for their teams. Its going to be an uphill battle, but the best thing the Big 12 can do is win those SEC battles when they come up.

The Big 12 petitioned the NCAA to waive the 12 team/2 divisions rule almost a year ago. So far, they've taken no action. Now that the Power 5 have autonomy we may not need to go thru the nc2a.

The sec has been doing this for years.

I wasn't implying/suggesting this was a new development - the fact remains the only way to change perception of the SEC is for the Big 12 to take advantage when the opportunities are there.
