The Texas Longhorns have had an up and down season. The roster has been completely turned over and the players Texas fans were anticipating have either been dismissed, gotten injured, or were forced to retire.
The Longhorns took their lumps culminating with a 23-0 loss to Kansas State. Since then, the Longhorns have looked like a different team.
What's the difference? The Longhorns have been bringing the BOOM!
The offense and the defense are bringing the boom for this football team. The offensive line is starting to bring the boom and understand their position on the field. In the first half on Saturday afternoon, the offensive line manhandled the West Virginia front 7, giving Tyrone Swoopes plenty of time in the pocket. The Longhorns also opened up plenty of holes for the running backs, who gained almost 180 yards rushing in the first half.
The defense played physical for four quarters - big hit after big hit. Clint Trickett never felt safe.
And the defensive MVP? Cedric Reed, who had 3 sacks and a forced fumble. The senior has been unproductive all season long but played this game with hustle and the will to get the job done. He really laid the BOOM when he sacked Clint Trickett in the end zone.
The Longhorns made so many BOOM plays, that Smokey the Cannon was quite ineffective.
Texas notched another exciting victory on Saturday; however, there are two games left in the season. The Longhorns need 1 more win and will have to earn it in either Stillwater (against Oklahoma State) or beat an elite TCU team at home. The challenge of facing TCU looks even greater after their performance against Kansas State.
Oklahoma State has games against Texas, at Baylor, and at Oklahoma to end the season. The Cowboys are currently 5-4, and had a bye on Saturday. They know they need to become bowl eligible and Texas stands in their way. Likewise, Oklahoma State stands in the way of bowl eligibility for Texas. One team is going to assure themselves of a bowl game this coming Saturday.
For Texas, the question is whether they are ready to dictate rather than react? In other words, are they ready to bring the BOOM.
Other College Football Thoughts in Week 11
- Georgia's performance against Kentucky is why College Football is a week to week game. It's a hard game to judge overall because so much can change on a weekly basis. College Football must have a playoff that includes all conference champions.
- Texas A&M beat Auburn. I like this result. After an embarrassing loss on Saturday, Auburn is likely out of the playoff discussion which will mean only 1 SEC team will be in the playoffs. I guess one can hope right?
- I don't know why TCU thought purple names on a black jersey wsa a good idea but if you are trying to get your players recognized by the award committees, it's probably a good idea to make sure those names stand out especially in a big game.
- Michigan won 10-9. And no, this was not a hockey game.
- Minnesota scored 51 points. Let me repeat that, the Minnesota Golden Golphers scored 51 points.
- Yeah, Notre Dame is not elite. Point taken. I retract my previous statements on the Fighting Irish.
- North Dakota State lost to Northern Iowa snapping their 33 game winning streak in Division 1 football. That includes wins over Iowa State and Kansas State. That's a very good football program. Maybe if North Dakota can sustain a big population shift with the discovery of oil in that state, they can move to the FBS level. Idaho did it, so can they.
- TCU got a huge win for their program. For years, they wanted to prove that their program could compete in a BCS conference. They needed a few years to adapt to the rigor of power conference football, but the results are favorable this year. The Longhorns don't need to be afraid of TCU's emergence, they just need to take care of themselves and build the program like TCU did.
- Ohio State pulled off a huge win in East Lansing. Now does Ohio State jump Ole Miss in the polls? I doubt it.
- LSU completely blew it at home. So much for Big game Les Miles. You can say a 20-13 overtime game is thrilling football but I fail to see it.
- Oh Utah, you had a chance to go up 14-0 and instead fumbled at the goal line. You gave Oregon the ball and momentum that carried the Ducks to a win. I would feel bad for you but you did that to yourself.
