Everyone has their thoughts on our football situation. I have read comments on other boards... My feelings are Charlie needs Greg Robinson as DC and he needs to get an OC like the guy at TCU. If he stays with who he has I don't think he will last out his contract. The rest of the staff may not be as good as what was here either. Just MHO. Some will agree and some won't.

Some coaches do well at small schools and lesser conferences, but flop when they move up to primetime. ( One example is the Boise State coach who flopped at Colorado. ) Charlie may be one of those guys.

We all have our opinions, but one I would love to here talk about the situation our program is in right now is Red McCombs. He was adamant  about his thought of Strong as our head coach, and things sure seem to be pointing toward him maybe having a case when it comes to coaching a program as big as Texas.

Listening to the press conferences, Charlie seems over his head. Maybe its just he doesn't like doing them. Who knows.

I would love nothing more than to look back and say, " Man we sucked in year one but Charlie turned us around." but...Darrell Royal took a 1-9 team and won 6 games his first year. Mack took a 4-7 team ( sure injuries were a factor ) and won 7 or 8 games ( I know he had Ricky ), Mackovic took a 5-6 team and went 6-5 his first year.  David McWilliams took a 5-6 team and went 7-5 his first year......Charlie has taken a team that nearly won the Big 12 ( 8-5 over all ;7-2 in conference ) and turned them into probably 3-9 or 4-8 and ( 2-7 or 3-6 in conference ).

Not exactly Royal or Brown like. Not even Mackovic or McWilliams like.

Charlie took a 4-8 team and went 7-6 his first year at Louisville. Did Mack leave the cupboard that bare at Texas or was Red right and is Charlie over his head at a program like Texas and conference like the Big 12 ?

$5 million should buy you much more than a 3-9 or 4-8 football team. I don't care how bare the cupboard might be or how many injuries you might have. Other programs have injuries or lack talent and don't go 3-9 or 4-8.

if you are going to lose at least show progress. We flounder in all areas week after week.

A few facts to ponder:

SFA scored 16, ISU scored 28, UTEP scored 28 vs KSU......We scored ZERO against KSU. Swallow that. Do these places have better athletes than us ?

Utah State, UCF, Nevada, Boise all beat BYU.....They kill us 41-7 ( BYU lost QB, but he didn't play defense )

NDSU, Iowa, OSU, Baylor, KSU, and Toledo held ISU to less than 45 ....We didn't.

He gets a mulligan for 2014 but......HOT SEAT for 2015 : Charlie Strong is on it !!!

For sure. He needs to keep it out of the media. Just curious as to what he thinks about now.

If we don't show real progress in 2015, I'm gonna be concerned.  I'm willing to give CFS a pass this year because the O-Line was in such disarray and our QB development and overall depth is poor.  I can't blame him for not risking Heard's psyche and confidence behind this front.

IMHO, McCombs didn't "make in ass of himself".  If a BMD who's contributed a gazillion dollars to UT isn't entitled to his opinion, who is?  Only the hypersensitive would misconstrue his comments as racism.

You stated your case very well.

To me, Strong is building this program in a completely different fashion than it was in and different from the recipe that other coaches use to find immediate success in Year 1. The challenge of taking a longer term approach is that he and/or his assistants might not be at Texas if they take too long to implement their program.

From my vantage, next weekend's game in Lubbock is critical to his tenure. He isn't going to get fired in Year 1 and neither are any of his assistants. However, if things go poorly next Saturday, Strong will lose support from a piece of the fanbase.

of course he's entitled to his opinion. he said charlie should be a position coach. maybe a coordinator. yeah, he sounded like an ass. that's my opinion.

i agree with your first paragraph entirely.

....and the next year or two may prove Charlie should be a position coach or DC at a program like Texas. Then again Red could be way off base. The next year or two will prove it, one way or the other.

Next week at Tech will be big in keeping fans on board. After TCU hung 82 on Tech's defense and the points Tech has given up to Cent Arky 35, UTEP 26, Kansas 21, 40+ to everyone else...we better look good on offense. Our defense will have its hands full. KSU is the only team to hold Tech under 26.

I agree

We'd better score at least 30 on Tech's terrible defense or CFS and staff are gonna lose the fan base.  Lubbock is gonna be rocking, but I don't care.  It's time to step up.  No excuses

My thought is that Strong is going about building a good program for the long term. The discipline problems and some poor recruiting the last few years have left him with a shortage of really good players. He needs to get out and recruit some kids that will play, and hopefully some JUCO kids that can help immediately.

The kind of program he is trying to build is the kind we need. I am willing to be more patient than some, but I hope he can get it turned around as quickly as possible. We are not that far off, but are missing some key ingredients.

I do hope that we will be mentally ready to play Tech next Saturday. They will be on fire, I suspect.

As for the media, we all knew Charlie wasn't a media person from the beginning. What can he say after a loss like yesterday? Most of us would be speechless as well.

what red mccombs espoused upon that most humiliating day... was racially deep rooted.  this entitled good ole boy, spoke from his heart.. and the whole world knows it.

red mccombs has endowed the university of texas with an exorbitant amount of financial resources.  i am indeed man enough to thank him as per the bottom of my heart for his generosity.

however, this same man embarrassed the university of texas in front of the entire universe upon the hiring of it's first black head coach.

i can certainly forgive red mccombs as per his notorious and now world famous stance.  however, it shall be very hard to forget.

mccombs, had better come through upon our current efforts to reconstruct DKR / new prospective football facilities...

he now owes our great university.

You mean the OC that was throwing the ball to stop the clock allowing Baylor time to come from behind?

No thanks. . . ..

Now GR?

You bet, head and shoulders better than Bedford .. . .

What CFS needs is a QB and an OL. . . .suddenly we're the Dallas Cowboys. . .has nothing to do with scheme or playcalling. . .

Watson and Wickline are actually doing a great job trying to turn bad rump roast into filet.. . .

And like Rod M in Dallas, a real DC who can really develop and improve players. . . .

But the chef, he can only do so much

I think we have the best Defensive Coordinator that money can buy.... and as far as Strong goes he is my head coach and looking forward to the future.... that's about all I have to say about this. ....

When you have an OL that was thrown together at the last minute, thanks to injuries and general dumbassness, it is going to lead to issues for the entire team,

Then you add a project QB into the mix, then you are really pretty screwed. Consistency is a must have, followed by confidence, at the position which Swoopes has neither. Those are things that can be gained, but will he last long enough?

Oh, lets look next at our "5 star" running backs. I hate to hate on them, but they have never lived up to the hype. Even with the OL issues, we should see a lot more out of those two.

Defense has some issues, don't get me wrong. However the defenses first issue, is the offense.

We are a train wreck, dumpster fire, etc. We have so many problems and I think that you add in the fact we have a new HC who has totally disrupted everything these guys knew (which is a good thing for the long run), we are in for a lot of downs and a few ups over the rest of this season. I am hoping next year will show us a bit more promise.

FWIW (and that ain't much) my main concern with Strong is his ability to motivate the team.  The first time I felt this way was after the BYU game when he said that he told the team they weren't ready to play.

I know that there are a lot of people who downplay the importance of motivation and say that it is the responsibility of the players, but I don't buy that for a minute.  Fire-breathing is all well and good, but it can be a detriment as well as a possible incentive to perform better.

I know it can't be a factor in every game, but playing like your hair is on fire should be the normal mode, not the exception.

Personally.... In light of what is happening in college athletics, I like what Coach is doing with the discipline. I believe it has hurt this year, but know in the future it will show dividends. I do believe the talent level is down and as Coach gets those recruits that handle the discipline we will improve. On the other hand, I would have liked to see a bit more speed offensively, if for no other reason, it's more fun to watch. Texas high school football has become spread oriented and those recruits would have been a bit more attracted to Texas. (Receivers in general). Let's face it, you are a receiver and you can have 45 passes a game or 15 passes.... Which has the most intrigue? With all that said.... Charlie is our future and I believe he can do it.
