Something I've noticed about Texas High School Football

For some reason the state of Texas does not produce elite talent at LB. Jefferson is probably the first elite talent at LB in over 4 years (and it's not even a certainty that he will turn out on the next level). Just looking at the 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 classes this state is very short on talent at LB. I'm not real sure why that's the case specifically for LB, but it's interesting.

That's true. I just haven't seen many LBs from Texas that have been productive on the next level in the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 classes. Granted, a shift to the spread on the collegiate level might have also had an impact. Edmond has arguably been one of the better LBs when looking at the top LB recruits in the state of Texas. Don't get me wrong Edmond is a decent to pretty good LB, but if that's the best Texas has had to offer over the past few years that's saying something. More of the lower ranked LBs have ended up being more productive in the state, and there's still only a small number. Texas hasn't produced an elite level LB in 4 years IMO.

The other factor is the number of well-off Texas high school teams that are so advanced that almost all of their stars reach their physical peaks earlier than players in other states who haven't had the advantages afforded by a high school program with almost bottomless resources.

It's been an issue for years. . . it is the unintended consequence of the spread which focuses most defenses into nickle and dime coverages.

Thus there is little call for LB development.
