Report: SMU 'intrigued' by Mack Brown

Could Mack Brown be back on a sideline in Texas next season?

SMU is currently in the market for a head coach after June Jones stepped down from the position earlier this month, and according to one report, Jones' replacement could be another coach from Texas who recently walked away.

And that coach is Mack Brown.

FoxSports.com's Bruce Feldman reports that "well-connected SMU brass are intrigued by Brown and think he might be tempted by the chance to coach again."

Brown is currently working as an analyst for ESPN, but there's no telling whether or not he'd have legitimate interest in the job -- if offered. Plenty of coaches transition from the sideline to the studio and find life on television to be a lot better, as there are far less demands on your time.

If Brown did want to return, though, he'd be a good hire for SMU. He's obviously familiar with the state of Texas and recruiting there, but he'd also bring a sort of legitimacy to the SMU program that it just hasn't had in a long time.

It's certainly an interesting idea, but whether or not it's a realistic one, well, never say never I suppose

Mack would be crazy to take that job. SMU is a complete dumpster fire. It will take 3 or 4 years to get that program back on track, I don't think Mack will be coaching long term.

SMU would be foolish to hire Mack Brown.

He's lost his fastball, not that he ever had one when it came to X's & O's.  They need somebody younger, innovative, and high-energy.  That ain't Mack.  From a selfish POV, I'd enjoy it because it'd make for many humorous local news stories in DFW.

I don't know, Mack might be able to do some good there. No, he's not an Xs and Os guy. But maybe he doesn't have to be that at SMU. SMU might just throw enough money at him to make him say yes.

Mack is a program builder. That is likely his main attraction to SMU. He built North Carolina. Rebuilt Texas. SMU might be another great challenge on a smaller scale. If he can turn around Texas, he could do the same at SMU although the ponies would never be a serious player on the national scene.

i'm with SHA on this one. mack could go out a hero with an 8-win season at smu. might help erase some of the bile from his last couple of years here.

Don't know about that, Mack and Sally sure didn't want to leave Texas. It's a low pressure job that can only go up. SMU has lot of big money guys.

Problem is, IMO, if SMU hired Mack, they'd expect instant results, as they'd be paying him out the wazoo.  That program needs someone cheaper, younger and willing to stay for a long time.  That ain't Mack.

I think Mack would give it at least five years, if he took the SMU job. And i think he could turn it around in that time.

I don't think SMU's AD or BOR have any delusions about where their program is right now. There is no quick fix. The cupboard is bare at SMU. Their recruiting has stunk over the last 2-3 years. If Mack does anything well, it's recruit. SMU will buy him all the coffee he wants, too.

This is all speculation as no one really knows if SMU is serious or if Mack would be interested. But it is fun to talk about.

mark, mack brown look's waaaay to old for any of this... isn't he?

He would be treated like a god at SMU. They'd give him whatever he asked for. He's not too old for that.

Who knows though. Not me. SMU could hire an up and comer tomorrow.

Brown would win at SMU because hed be able to get better recruits than the people he plays against, not to mention 8 wins a year there is great for that program.

One thing Mack can do is recruit...and he could promise potential recruits immediate playing time because of the

quality of players currently taking the field for SMU.  I don't think this will happen, but it's an interesting topic.

Mack can build up a program that is down in the dumps. He did a lot of great things at Texas early on and through the championship. He also got North Carolina on the map.

My concern would be his age and if he has it in him to do that again. He has never been a great X/O coach, but building is what made him the right guy at Texas for where we were back then.

A change of scenery and the need to try and prove his detractors wrong, may be all he needs to get that energy lost by age.

SMU could do a worse!

“I’m enjoying working in television at ESPN,” Brown told ESPN.com. “I’ve made a conscious decision to concentrate on this through the fall. I jumped into this [job at ESPN] with both feet. [His wife] Sally and I both made a commitment to this.

“I will not make any decisions about my future until December, after I talk with my bosses at ESPN and see if they’re happy with me, and then when I can evaluate my first year on television. ESPN and [ESPN president] John Skipper have been great to me.”

Brown said he had not been contacted by SMU (or any school).

I believe Mack wants to slide into Corso's seat. This may depend on what timeline Corso has provided ESPN.

not exactly 'i'm retired, coaching is out of my system, i'll never go back'.
