Dominating Defense - Part I of the Texas team preview

That's a subject I think about a lot. You don't reach the levels Mack reached without being a good coach. I think Mack saw the truth in the line from The Dark Knight "you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." He obviously got comfortable after winning the national championship and became more obsessed with preserving his legacy than improving it,

Completely agree with the first line. . .one of the saddest sights in football. . ..Johnny U as a Charger, Emmitt as a Cardnial or Namath as a Ram. . . .

But keep in mind, if not for a bad rule in 2008 or a freak injury to colt in 2009. . . .Mack likely wins another title. . .it was after that he fell apart. . .

DKR walked away too early but as a hero. . .

Thanks, Mike.

I've been feeling like a kid in the candy store every time I read an article detailing what Strong is doing.  It's good to know there is someone out there that feels the same way.  Your comparison of Mack and Jerry is excellent.  I never thought of it that way, but I am a huge Cowboy fan that has given up hope as long as Jerry maintains control.

I am concerned about safety, too.  My hope is that Akina was so busy protecting his turf from Diaz, he didn't coach these guys the way he has in the past.  If not that, then my hope is they were running two uncoordinated game plans.  We know we will get the entire package with Bedford/Strong.

Tough and physical sounds outstanding right now.  I don't know how Mack ended up as a coach.  Did he change that much?  How did he get by Royal, English, and the rest of the guys that interviewed him?  It beats me.

Java, I really like your contributions. Hope you keep them up. Mack was great the first few years, and the record shows it. As the years went by, he seemed to lose the fire in his belly. And there were a lot of distractions, and a lot of non football stuff got into the mix. I always thought that Sally had way too much input the last few years (she was at practices much of the time, and on the field with the players), and that had to be a huge distraction, and was probably why the discipline and toughness declined. But that is speculation. I can tell you that my Mother would never have even dreamed about going to practices or having anything to do with the team in that way. I will bet you won't see Mrs. Strong out there either.

After talking to Mack in the Summer of 2010, I was convinced he was going to retire after that season. Of course, we know what happened that year. I think the HCIW situation had a lot to do with the staff dysfunction. I remember that it seemed like everyone on the staff but Mack was talking to somebody over at OB. That is no way to run a football team. It literally wrecked the program. Mack tried to put it back together, but just did not have the capability to do it. All of his momentum was lost, and he was not going to get it back. It was very sad to see that happen, and I hated to see it end the way it did.

But we have Charlie Strong, and like most others, I am terribly impressed with his program. I think it is exactly what we needed. We will again be competing at the very high levels we did through 2009 under Mack pretty quickly, I believe. I am looking forward to a great run under Strong.

PS. Mack was the oldest FB coach Texas has had. It is a young man's game. It is very rare for a coach anywhere to keep up the high levels needed for 20 years, particularly at a high pressure school like Texas. My Dad was 49 when he hung them up; Coach Royal was 52. So be easy on Mack. He is gone, and hid did a great job until the last 3 years.

I think Mack saw the truth in the line from The Dark Knight "you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." He obviously got comfortable after winning the national championship and became more obsessed with preserving his legacy than improving it, but it doesn't change the fact that the run of success he had at Texas was one of the best a coach could hope for. He's certainly not the same style as coach strong, but it's been proven that both styles can work. Eventually every coach just loses the handle if they stay long enough. Mack found himself in a weird position as the guy who saved the program and the man who ultimately saw to its downfall. I've thought about this so much, I've considered authoring his biography lol.
Mike, I just responded to Java on this subject. Mack was a great coach and a great guy. He certainly had a different style than Strong, but he was very successful with it. Like a lot of folks, he just kept at it longer than perhaps he should have.

I think he is in a great situation now, where he will be very successful again. I certainly wish him the very best. There is life after coaching.

Completely agree cheese. I was a big fan of Mack and I think once these few years pass everyone will look fondly on his legacy. Hell, he's responsible for the level of expectations that ultimately made the fans turn on him. It doesn't mean he's innocent, but I think people should have some perspective here.

Here's a question for the board. Would you take Mack's legacy over and over again. That means Charlie Strong with a 14 year run, multiple BCS games and 2 national championship appearances with one win. So every 14 years the new coach wins 2 BCS bowls and plays for the chance to win two national championships before fizzling out?

I'm with you bcherry

I think a lot of people make this a zero sum subject, but the fact is there are a lot of great examples of great athletes and coaches just holding on too long. The end should not take away from what he accomplished here.

I think in today's CFB, a coach's "shelf life' is 10-12 years. . .15 max .. .

But if CFS delivers 2 playoff appearances and 1 title in that 10-12 year run. . .I'll be living in tall cotton as they say.  Unless we're going to count the Sugar Bowl vs the SEC as a BcS. . .

In 10-12 years, I predict CFS gets to the playoffs 4 times though which is actually better than BcS since that is 1 of 4 not 1 of 10 .. .

I know he has 5 years (in my cheap seats view) and I want to see him have every day of it though I see him and the playoffs being friends soon. . .

Damn I'm so conditioned to the BCS system I didn't even think about the playoff structure.

Great article and fantastic conversations.

We've got the talent to be a very very good defense. If we can get the safety position nailed down, we might just have the best defense we've seen in a while.

Good stuff.

I agree with most of your points.

But "the secondary... is the most uncertain this unit has looked in recent memory," is not true, unless your recent memory only goes back 2 yrs.

At this time in 2011, the secondary was a huge question mark. Projected starters at CB were 2 untested sophs, Byndom and Phillips. We had talent and experience at S with Vacarro and Gideon.

But the back-ups consisted of AJ White, Christian Scott and Nolan Brewster.

Then, as now, we had a talented bunch of true frosh: Diggs, Thompson, Evans and Turner.

That defense turned out pretty good (finishing 11th in total D), mainly because we had a stout front 7 - Jeffcoat, Oakafor, Randall, Acho, Robinson, etc.

IMO, the '14 D will be comparable IF we stay healthy.

Thank you.

I was gone all day yesterday, and didn't see this last night.  I truly appreciate your response.

Quite candidly, over Mack's first few years, I really liked what he did, with the exception the of offensive line and special teams.  When he finally fixed that, I knew we were on our way.  Then, we had those wonderful, magical championship years.

When everything started to spin out of control, I was no longer in the Austin area and had no idea that Sally had taken a larger role in the program.  I was aware of many of the other distractions and saw all of the references to 'cookies' and 'orange slices', but did not know where it all began.  Privately, I wondered if Mack was suffering from an undisclosed illness.

Believe it or not, my three year old orange and white Brittany is named Mack.

I became disenchanted with Mack due to his selfish, childish behavior with Muschamp, and his behavior when it was time for him to leave.  During the tough times a person's character is truly tested, and Mack and Sally were publicly disrespectful of Texas and everyone who had championed them at Texas it was time for him to leave.  Texas treated both of them with respect, and he did not reciprocate.  I find that distasteful, and Jamail's involvement didn't help.

I respect what he did and respect the good years he gave us.  I wish that he and Sally had handled his leaving with dignity.

The defensive line - arguably one of the best in the nation - will mitigate any inherent weaknesses in the secondary.  The Big 12 offenses will make our defense look weaker than it is - maybe.  But don't be fooled, we will be salty.

I believe Baylor will be our biggest challenge - simply because of their QB and they have one of the better OL in the country as well.  They are monsters!

Finally, and no one seems to dwell on this, we will actually have experienced football coaches on the sidelines.  There will be no Applewhites, Diazs or on-the-job retirees.  Our coaches will be MOTIVATED!

For example and IMO, the only motivated coach, last year, was a substitute DC - brought in in the last minute.

We are going to see a different product, this year.  And we will like it.

I don't know if Briles really wanted the Texas job or if he just had some casual talks with Texas, but I don't doubt he really wants to beat us.  I'm pretty certain that OU does.  :-)

I'm going to rehash an old sore subject, but I was sorta privy to a few things.  May as well relate them now, FWIW.

Briles was one of 10 prime candidates, but was never actually considered.  The top ten candidates were researched by a professional evaluation service and presented to Patterson AND Powers, for consideration.

There were only two candidates seriously considered and Strong was one of them. (Saban wasn't one of them).

At least this is what I heard through the grapevine - 3rd and 4th hand.  So, as always, take it with a grain of salt. :)

doc,

Thank you for sharing.  It really doesn't matter to me who the other candidate was.  It is difficult to imagine anyone doing a better job than Charlie is doing.  It is only an opinion, but I think he looked at our needs, prioritized them, and began checking them off of a list.  The man has done work!

The players seem to respect him, and they seem much more relaxed and confident when they respond to questions.  I don't interpret that as 'media savvy', but the confidence they feel in their coaches, their teammates, and in themselves.

The future is so bright, I gotta wear shades!

I liked the upside of that secondary more than this one. Diggs is the only player in this unit I trust.

If we're comparing now, Aug. '14, to Aug. '11, then I like the upside of this year's secondary better. We've got proven players in Diggs, Thomas, Thompson, Evans compared to '11 when the ONLY proven players were Vaccaro and Gideon.

But my point was, just like in '11, we don't know what the secondary is going to look like by the end of the season. At the start of Aug. '11, Diggs wasn't on the 2 deep. By the second game he was a starter. The defense that year turned out pretty good and I believe this years will be also.

Another thing you might be interested in.  The interview with Strong actually took place at his house with his wife and kids in attendence.  As it turned out, Patterson, and a couple of others flew to the wrong airport, in one of UT's corporate jets from the UT air force.  They landed in an Indiana crop duster airport and borrowed a used van to drive to Strong's house - about an hours drive away.  I bet that made quite an impression on Strong. :)

Patterson was so impressed with Strong that he hired him on the spot and he had 4 other coaches to interview.

At least, this is the scuttlebutt that I have heard.  Don't hold me to it.
