Friday Night Lights vs Varsity Blues

Bull Durham is the greatest sports movie!

Surprisingly, I never watched either FNL or VB.  Read the FNL book, though, and played THSFB for a 5A suburban school in Greater Houston back in the mid '80s.  We weren't as nuts as Permian or their fans...or as good!

Pfft. It's not about Susan Sarandon. If that's what you took from the movie, you completely missed the point.

I'm with Lukus on this one. Sarandon was a distraction the whole movie. I spent the entire movie feeling sorry for Robbins. Sarandon is a skank, IMO.

Please. That movie was as overrated as the day is long.

Costner's constant over-acting was on par with Nicholas Cage. Heck, I'd put Nic Cage's performance in Face/Off over Costner.

And don't even get me started about how the director COMPLETELY jumped the shark when the credits started rolling.

***SPOILER ALERT***

EVERY CRAPPY MOVIE FROM THE 80s ENDED WITH THE TWO MAIN CHARACTERS DOING THEIR "WHITE PEOPLE" DANCE IN FRONT OF A JUKEBOX.

Get some original material.

I can't believe you guys are trolling everyone here making them think that Bull Durham is a decent movie. Waste of time is all it is.

The one thing Costner does well is baseball. . .3 of the best baseball movies of all time are his and one of the best golf movies.

Overact?

How I know you never played sports. . . . btw, Nicholas Cage was outstanding in face/off. . .one of this best roles. . . but when it comes to knowing the end of crappy movies, now that is expertise of yours I will defer to. . . . .

PS, I seriously doubt there is a sports movie that conveys the day to day glory and terror of sports so well....or the pull of sports. . though Lukas completely missing that nuance . .. . .. well, just read his movie reviews. . .

Wait, so now this board is anti-skank?

Glad I didn't sign up for a year.

I am indeed flattered, but I am just one guy.

Just as an aside, the guy in the picture is Olin Buchanan, who is a journalist in real life. I worked with him at the Longview News Journal back in the day.

IMO, this is like comparing Animal House to Porky's or Star Wars to Spaceballs. I am a member of criticker.com, where folks make their own lists of movies, rated from 0-100. On my criticker list, I have Friday Night Lights rated at 87. Varsity Blues is at 57. I think FNL just might be the best movie ever made about high school football.
Looking at your ratings: is Varsity Blues at 57 rated better than FNL at 87? Is number 1 the best or 100? Not trying to be difficult, just wondering if FNL is the best HS football flic how is rated below Varsity Blues in your list? I'll have to check out the site you noted(thanks for not stealing proprietary movie info by the way) thanks for the lead.

100 is the best, 1 is worst.

100 is the best, 1 is worst.

So what is a 101?

The "original" ranking list is from Dan Jenkins amazing but not PC novel. . . . Semi Tough

The best is a 1 and there ain't ever been a 1. . . . .

It the best was a 10. . . .what's an 11?

Oh wait, 8 hot and less than 4 crazy .. . flacking Tranny. . .you're dating a dude. . . ..(anyone who doesn't get it. . .I'll post the video)

I have never seen FNL. I have seen VB and I liked it. I had a great cast of young up and coming actors plus the music was great. Hot for teacher and Thunderstruck to name a few.

Varsity Blues was an MTV production, so logically music was going to be a big part of the movie. And it was done very well, I'll add. Foo Fighters had some good stuff in that one, too.

This would be a great week to watch FNL. . . .an awesome and intense movie. . . .

No "cheer leaders in whipped cream" or "stripper teachers" but GREAT movie and GREAT football movie. . .

I had forgotten MTV did VB and that's about right. . .as I said, it's not bad but it's Hallmark quality .. .

Sorry Lucas etc. . . . VB doesn't crack the Top 10 of football movies. . .

I just went over my Criticker list looking for my top rated sports movies.  Here are my top 12: Raging Bull (94), Rocky (92), Hoosiers (90), Ali (89), Million Dollar Baby (89), Caddyshack (87), The Champ (87), The Express (87), Friday Night Lights (87), Brian's Song (86), The Fighter (86) and Miracle (86). Looking at that list, you'd think boxing was my favorite sport since six of my top 12 are about boxing. Actually I haven't watched a boxing match in about 15 years.
