Texas chancellor: No beer sales at DKR in 2014

By Brian Davis

University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa said Thursday he will not approve beer and wine sales at Royal-Memorial Stadium this fall. It doesn’t appear anyone can change his mind, either.

“Not going there,†Cigarroa told the American-Statesman. The comments came after a UT System Board of Regents meeting. “I mean, we’re not going to do it this year.

“(UT President) Bill Powers and I agreed that we really needed more of a experience of selling beer and wine at our basketball games, baseball and track and field.â€

Texas athletic director Steve Patterson always said selling alcohol at some events in the spring was something of a test. Athletic department officials got beer sales approved for one women’s and one men’s basketball game at the tail end of the regular season. Beer sales were also approved midway through the baseball season.

However, beer sales were not approved at the concession stands for the spring football game inside Royal-Memorial Stadium. It was widely assumed that beer sales would be approved for the fall, though. Cigarroa left no doubt that won’t be the case.

Cigarroa mentioned the limited alcohol sales at two basketball games, and “there were no adverse incidents and all. But before we expand this to the football stadium, I wanted to make sure that we had more data and that we weren’t rushed into it so much. So we elected to postpone that action this year and revisit it this year.â€

Yea! Steve Patterson is Grrrrrrrrreat!! He is delivering for us and to Hell with those who claim he isn't being given enough time!

Bellmont, where mediocrity and failure gets lifetime emoyment.

To tell you the truth I don't have a big problem with this, because my tickets are club and I get beer at every game ...
My issue is that Patterson has the balls to tell the 70,000 fans who are treated second class they aren't doing their part by showing up early enough or staying for the entire game.
When Patterson and the program gives the finger to 70,000 fans, don't bitch when only 30,000 fans are around for the fourth quarter.

Why is it we can make beer & wine happen at basketball and baseball games?

I'm struggling with Bellmont's logic and rationale here.  Liability insurance costs?  What is it?

My guess is because Cigarroa wants to give the finger to the alumni for backing Powers and Patterson doesn't give a sh!t about delivering for the fans because the 30,000 he cares about are being taken care of at games.

I think the 70,000 who are being given the finger need to show up late and leave early to send a message.

BFD. This is goofy to bitch about it.

Do the ol flask in the boot if you really HAVE to have booze at the games, like has been done since I was a student. Take a break at halftime and saunter across the street to the Exes Center and get a beer then.

This is not a slap in the face to anyone. They powers that be just want to see a longer test at FEC and DFF before pulling the trigger on this.

Personally, I think it's a very rational decision and one that those in command feel needs further information provided before they do this.

Kudos for not rushing into something half-cocked without the needed info.

There is a LOT of money to be made by selling beer at DKR, but if the due diligence is not done, the potential for problems is significantly greater than at the small sample sizes provided this far at FEC & DFF.

Lol. Take booze away from the 30,000 who are getting it and see the result.

We have 70% of the fans being treated like sh!t by Bellmont and those people need to give the finger to Bellmont, just as Bellmont has given them the finger. Patterson and Bellmont will NEVER deliver for the loyal fans until the fans quit showing up.

Maybe you need to step away from the ledge. All you have done lately is bitch and moan about what a shitty job Patterson has done so far.

Here's a thought; give up your day job, put your money where your huge trap of a mouth is, and get your butt over to the 40 and start providing them all the answers that you seem to hold in your finger tips?

Why waste your bitching on a board with a small following? If you're going to shout from the rooftops, it would behoove you to do so from a platform higher than this.

Make an appointment to have lunch with Steve. Hell, why not just ask to have a few minutes with the BOR?

You are pretty vocal about how miserable things are. Get off your ass and do something about it.

Steve Patterson is a loser. It was his job to deliver for the fans and improve the game day experience. So far all we can depend on is higher ticket prices and a fan base where some are treated more equal than others. I hope the 70,000 fans being given the finger show up late and leave early. Screw you, Patterson.
Lol... dang man chill.... no one is giving anyone a finger. I have to believe that if someone leaves the game early because of beer then they are there for the wrong reason. Crap if you want beer that bad then spend a little more and get seats where you can get beer...

Steve gives a crap about 30,000 fans. That is it. He has shown he isn't going to deliver for the loyal fan, just the wealthy fan. It is bullsh!t to treat wealthy fans one way and treat loyal fans differently.
Yes, I am vocal about how things are because this time of transition is the best time to advocate for change. We hope the program will change for the better without having to go through the experience of the wealthy treating the majority of the fanbase like sh!t. But, it us what it is.

How is Patterson's "Mickey Mouse Initiative" coming along with Disney?

That's BS.... I'm not wealthy... in fact I would bet that you make more money than me... you talk about loyal fan but you mentioned that your definition of a loyal is someone is someone that would need beer to watch Texas Longhorns play football or showing up late or leaving early because they don't get there beer.... that sounds real loyal

It isn't about beer. If some fans are responsible enough to be able to enjoy a beer at a game, why are the majority being denied the same treatment? The answer is money. Wealthy fans are allowed to have a beer, but the great unwashed masses aren't worthy of such simple pleasures.

Either we are all respected as fans or we aren't. If Patterson allows wealthy fans one standard, he can call on them to fill the stands. If 70,000 fans are going to be treated as second class fans, we have every right to show up late, leave early and let Patterson explain to broadcasters, advertisers and recruits that the second class fans aren't important to the program.

Crap to be honest with you... I really don't care about the beer that much anyway. If they did away with all the liquor it would not bother me that much... I go to the game for football.

Now about Patterson. .. you would not like him if he gave everyone free beer

It isn't Patterson who is voting this down, it's Cigarroa. And there is no solid logic behind his unilateral decision. It's just annoying whether you choose to drink or not. SMU among many schools across the country will sell beer at their stadiums. It increases revenue and is something fans would prefer, by and large. Why is it such a big deal to sell someone a beer at a football game?

I would like him to treat us as one fanbase, not rich fans he can milk and loyal fans he can screw. We shouldn't need to do shit like show up late and leave early en masse to be treated equally for concessions.
