It was bad enough most Longhorn fans had to endure football season without access to the Longhorn Network, but now they are being teased even more. It’s basketball season and guess what that means? If you guessed “Most games will be televised by the Longhorn Network,” then you would be correct. When the Runnin’ Horns play top 25 teams the games are typically showed on ESPN or CBS but the others…. yeah… available to only the select customers that live in areas fortunate enough to pick up the station carried by their local providers.
It was announced earlier this week that 62 Texas baseball and softball games would be carried primarily by The Longhorn Network. Undoubtedly this is not what fans wanted to hear – even if you aren’t a college baseball or softball fan. Throw in the fact that Oklahoma fans have Soonervision’s recent partnership with Fox to distribute Oklahoma programming in areas that carry Fox Sports Southwest and it is even tougher to stomach. The University of Texas is still the winner financially but it is the alumni and fans that lose out, at least temporarily. ESPN and the Longhorn Network realize things haven’t picked up in the manner they had hoped, but remain committed to the venture for the “long haul.”
Business is business but a deal has to be reached with some of the mainstream cable providers soon, right? Longhorn fans hope so.
