Recruiting momentum continues to build on the 40 Acres as Charlie Strong and Texas football nabbed a verbal commitment from Converse Judson (TX) defensive back Keivon Ramsey. The hard-hitting safety picked up an offer from Texas and committed on the field following the spring game. Ranked in the middle tier of most early recruit rankings in Texas, Ramsey boasts an impressive list of suitors including offers from Baylor, Oklahoma, LSU, and TCU. Ramsey’s pledge gives the Horns 10 commitments in the 2015 class.
Ramsey joins DeShon Elliot as the second defensive back committed to this class. The Judson High product is another example of the type of DB Vance Bedford and Chris Vaughn are targeting. At 6’1 and 170 pounds, Ramsey is another physical and athletic player who will be a versatile defender for the Longhorns.

Film Analysis: Keivon Ramsey has a solid frame with room for maturation – he could conceivably add twenty or twenty five pounds over the next few years. As the film shows, he’s very comfortable when playing straight downhill in support on run defense and short passes. Ramsey possesses good speed and plays well in man-to-man coverage. Even though there is not a lot of film showcasing his coverage skills, the clips of him defending the pass reveal fluid hips and great ball skills. Ramsey is a good tackler who breaks down with great form and has the ability to intimidate receivers over the middle with his proclivity for contact.
However, Ramsey needs to improve the angles he takes in coverage, as he appears prone to play a bit out of control and over-aggressively. Those tendencies cause him to overrun plays or to be out of position to make a tackle.
Final Verdict: It’s interesting to see the type of defensive back the new coaching staff is targeting. Keivon Ramsey stands out as another player in the group of 2015 pledges that possesses tremendous skills and does not fit into a clearly defined position at this point in his football career. Without being able to view more film of him in coverage, it’s hard to confidently know what to expect – especially in two or three years. The overall impression is that Ramsey is a bit of a diamond in the rough that should really benefit from a college strength program. With his offer list, it is obvious that college coaches see potential.
