The Texas Longhorns added their fifth offensive line commitment of the 2015 class when they received good news from Coppell (TX) Offensive Lineman Connor Williams. The fifteenth commit of the Longhorn’s 2015 class chose Texas over offers from just about every program in the nation. This impressive offer list includes Baylor, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio State, and UCLA.
Williams plays tight end for Coppell, but looks to be a prospect that will transition to offensive tackle at the Texas. With the recent attrition on the offensive line, Charlie Strong looks to be gearing up to take a large offensive line class that could see as many as seven linemen sign. Williams is another prototype Joe Wickline prospect who is athletic with a large frame.
Williams represents a pretty big win considering his offer list. Wickline outrecruited some of the elite recruiters in the country. After a bit of bad news earlier in the week surrounding the team, this has to be a big boost to the coaching staff.
Film Analysis:
Williams has a very projectable frame at 6’5 270 lbs. He has virtually no bad weight on him and looks the part of a tight end. His athleticism jumps out at you immediately when you see him move. His quickness out of his stance, allows him to engage the opposition and dictate the battle. His in-line run blocking shows his impressive strength, and zone blocking showcases his ability to move laterally in space. In pass protection he shows good flexibility and long arms. The biggest obstacle he faces is a lack of understanding for the technique of pass blocking. This trait is fixable with coaching.
Final Verdict:
This is a huge pickup for Texas and could wind up being the jewel of the offensive line class. Wiliams is the classic case of a lower ranked prospect with a high ranked offer list. Joe Wickline has to be excited to be getting a guy with this much athleticism. Williams will need a redshirt season to put on weight and learn the finer points of the position, but the sky is the limit with this kid. He has the type of frame and athletic ability usually reserved for first round draft picks. That level is a long way from where he is today, but he has every opportunity to reach it.
