Lake Dallas cornerback Kobe Boyce wasn’t a big name on recruiting sites prior to this spring. Once his film got out and he performed well at The Opening regional in Dallas, the secret on Boyce was out. Boyce garnered attention from programs such as Arkansas, Baylor, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss before Texas offered him. It didn’t take long for him to decide that Austin was where he wanted to be. Since his commitment to the Longhorns, the attention hasn’t stopped. We spoke to Kobe following his high school spring game to get the latest on his recruitment.
Boyce did not play in the spring game due to a broken finger, but he was right in the thick of the action coaching his teammates through situations and cheering the defense on. Several college coaches were on-hand, and it was clear they were disappointed they wouldn’t get to see Boyce in action. It’s been a busy spring for the Texas commit. He was invited to The Opening finals in Oregon, and a number of schools are still recruiting him hard. “Oklahoma offered me two weeks ago, and then Iowa came and offered me the next day,†said Boyce. “Iowa was huge because Josh Jackson used to go to school here (Lake Dallas), he’s up there right now. We’re pretty close, so we’ve been talking about it but I’m still committed to Texas of course.â€
Alabama is another program that is taking a closer look at Boyce. While the Crimson Tide have yet to offer, they’ve made it clear that they really like him. Boyce was invited to Tuscaloosa this summer to camp, and it sounds like that opportunity may be too big for him to turn down. “I probably will, I just want to see what’s up there because I’ve never been there before. I might go possibly in June.†As for the Longhorns, Boyce told us he keeps in regular contact with many members of the coaching staff. “I talked to coach (Charlie) Williams last night for like thirty minutes just catching up. I’ve been talking to Vance Bedford, Coach (Jeff) Traylor, and Coach (Clay) Jennings.†Now that Boyce is committed, Texas doesn’t have to give him the hard sell anymore. “They just tell me to keep doing what I’m doing. They came down for spring twice, and we’ve just been talking a lot about the season and how my family has been doing.†Boyce told us he also plans to attend the Texas camp this summer and is excited to see what kind of talent they gather.
The class of 2016 for Texas was incredibly tight knit, and Boyce told us that this class is starting to grow close. “We have a group chat going. It’s fun to see what everyone is doing because we have people from all over Texas.†We asked Boyce to give us a breakdown of who in the class is the most entertaining, and he said all members bring something to the table. “Sam (Ehlinger) is the most vocal, Xavier (Newman) is pretty funny. Damion says some really funny stuff, and of course I throw mine in.†Aside from entertaining each other, this class is working hard at targeting uncommitted players and spreading the Texas message. “I’ve been talking to a few people. Tyrell Shavers from Lewisville is one of the people I’ve been talking to. I talk to (Lake Dallas teammate) Segun (Ijiyera) about Texas. I’m trying to get him into Texas and Texas into him. I just talk to people I know that can make an impact.†Before we departed, we asked Boyce to give us a rating on a 1-10 scale of his commitment to the Longhorns. There was no hesitation in him at all when he gave us the answer “10.†Expect Boyce to continue to garner interest throughout his senior season, and give some credit to the Longhorn staff for evaluating an elite defensive back before he was a known name.
