The point on a brisket is typically the fattiest cut. Pitmasters often trim the point (and select edges) off a brisket and return those pieces to the smoker.
Are burnt ends tough, chewy worthless cuts of meat, or are they heavenly bites of smoky goodness? It depends on who you ask…
Rather than discard the trimmings and fat, we choose to savor all the information that flows through the site. So, sit down and help yourself to some burnt ends.

With the Texas high school football playoffs in full swing we’ve had a chance to see and speak with a number of recruits who are on the radar for the Longhorns. We’ve also heard from a number of you that would like to do a recruiting chat once again. We always try to cater to the needs of our members so we are tentatively scheduling a chat for this Sunday night (11/29). We’ll have more details once we get everything nailed down. Also, be on the lookout for an article this week discussing the current state of recruiting and where the Longhorns stand for the top prospects still on their board.

Lamar is of course led by Texas quarterback commit Shane Buechele, while Mansfield boasts a powerful running game spearheaded by 2017 running back Kennedy Brooks. Mansfield Lake Ridge will face off against Mesquite Poteet in a game featuring Texas targets Loren Mondy for Lake Ridge and Daiquain Jackson for Poteet. Check in with the site to track progress from the weekend games and get the latest on what recruits are saying.

Texas picked up a commitment last week from Temple (TX) receiver Davion Curtis. For Curtis the scenario was truly a dream come true, as the speedy receiver named Texas his dream school early on in the process. We were told Curtis committed almost immediately to Charlie Strong, but kept the news quiet for a few days. Temple is in the middle of what looks to be a deep playoff run, and Curtis is focused on the goal of making it to state. We were able to speak with a source close to the recruitment who told us Davion and the family are extremely happy with the decision and are fully committed to the Longhorns and Charlie Strong. Curtis brings an element of speed that no one in the recruiting class can match. The explosive sprinter also might bring something else to the table. Curtis and Beaumont Central running back Devwah Whaley are very close and have talked about attending college together. We touched on this a bit in last week’s edition of Burnt Ends, but now that the cat is out of the bag on the commitment we can go a bit deeper. We were told there has been talk behind the scenes with Whaley and Curtis indicating that both are very interested in playing together. Our source even went so far as to say it is a done deal. Over the weekend, Whaley visited Fayetteville and publicly named Arkansas his current leader. It’s a three team race right now between the Razorbacks, Texas, and Georgia, with the Bulldogs falling behind. Obviously the development from this weekend shouldn’t be ignored, but our source has been on the money the whole way with this recruitment so we have no reason not to believe him. Whaley is scheduled to officially visit Texas with Curtis on December 12, so we will keep an eye out for any signs surrounding his recruitment. December 12th appears to be a busy weekend for Texas as they will host an array of recruits (commits and targets). Stay with us for all the latest on the 12/12 weekend.

The acquisition of Curtis, along with the pursuit of Lil’Jordan Humphrey and to a lesser extent Stephen Sullivan, have effectively ended the recruitment between Texas and DeSoto wide receiver Dee Anderson. We were told this weekend by someone close to Anderson that the book is pretty much closed at this point. Anderson is committed to LSU but with the turmoil going on in Baton Rouge he’s keeping things a bit open. Anderson is also considering UCLA and Boise State at this time.

North Mesquite isn’t a traditional powerhouse program, but the Stallions have advanced to the third round of the playoffs following an overtime thriller against Killeen Shoemaker. With a final score of 14-13, it was a clear defensive struggle all night long. While the Stallions host a bevy of talent on both sides of the ball, the headliner in this game was left tackle Jean Delance. As one of the most important targets still on the board for Texas, Delance drew quite a crowd of media watching his every move. Delance was far from the only big time recruit in the game though. The Shoemaker defensive line features two big time SEC commits in Kendell Jones (Alabama) and Rahssan Thornton (LSU). Delance was matched up on Thornton for most of the game, and even got to tangle with Jones once or twice. Delance handled himself well, showing off his textbook athleticism and technique, but he was aware of the challenge in front of him.
“Killeen has a good defense obviously, with the Bama commit and LSU commit but I enjoyed it,†Delance told HornSports. Delance took on a leadership role this offseason with the goal to take his team deep into a playoff run. That run will cause him to push his Michigan official visit back, but Delance is excited he gets to keep playing. “It’s amazing to go to the third round,†Delance told us. “It’s another week with my buddies. It was a lot of preparation, a lot of headache, and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears.†Delance currently has a top-4 of Texas, Michigan, Alabama, and LSU, and he maintains that everyone is neck and neck. He plans on committing during the Under Armour All-American game but acknowledged that a deep playoff run could also push his decision back. As for Texas, Delance is definitely feeling the love. “I love those guys, I’ve got a great relationship with my top 4 schools.†Last week, the Texas coaches visited Delance and he beamed when asked about it. “Coach BJ and Coach Traylor, much love from those guys. I shook their hands and talked to them and there was much love in the atmosphere as soon as I saw them.†Delance mentioned that Texas A&M wasn’t pursuing him hard enough and that’s what caused him to ultimately drop them from consideration. So what is the coaching staff pitching to the blue chip lineman? “They told me I’m a guy they need to play ASAP,†Delance told us. That pitch is very appealing to him, and Delance feels he can fit in right away as a prototypical tackle. Delance has set up visits to Alabama, LSU, and Michigan, and is working on getting one scheduled to Austin.

Mesquite Poteet gave the Longhorns so much last season when Texas closed on Malik Jefferson and Deandre McNeal. While the duo is definitely missed on campus, that hasn’t stopped Poteet from achieving success. The Pirates pulled off a last minute victory against Wylie East on Saturday following an incredibly entertaining back and forth game. Walter Dawn Jr was a standout player for Poteet, as the 5’7 athlete lined up all over the field for the Pirates. Dawn Jr. had touchdowns rushing and receiving, and also stepped in on defense to intercept a pass which set up Poteet’s game winning drive that culminated in a last second field goal. Texas isn’t currently looking at Dawn, but they are pursuing 2017 Poteet safety Daiquain Jackson. Jackson was solid on the back end for Poteet and showed some great range in coverage. We caught up with him after the game to see where he’s at in his recruitment. Jackson is hearing from Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech, Purdue, and SMU. He currently has offers from Navy and New Mexico. Jackson is incredibly interested in Texas, and has a bond with both Jefferson and McNeal. As for the struggles the Longhorns have seen on the field this season, Jackson doesn’t put much stock in those. “I know next year it will be a great program,†Jackson told us. “You have a lot of youngsters like Malik and Deandre down there handling their business.†Jackson said he’s heard from his former teammates who have told him great things about the Texas program and coaching staff, while encouraging him to think about Austin. If Texas were to offer they would be squarely in the mix, but Jackson does like Baylor as well. Poteet will be in action once again this weekend against Mansfield Lake Ridge.
