After being left off the 2-deep depth chart which was released on Monday, senior defensive tackle Ashton Dorsey will transfer from the University of Texas. The decision was announced on Tuesday morning, and confirmed by head coach Mack Brown, just 4 days before the team kicks off the 2013 season against New Mexico State.
Dorsey played high school football at John Tyler High School (Tyler, TX) and was a consensus 4-star recruit out of high school. He played in 30 games in his career at Texas, starting in 6 of them. His decision to transfer comes as a surprise particularly because of his senior status and 3 years of eligibility used, but the 6-2, 296 pound Dorsey had been nursing a calf injury. Not sure if the injury was lingering from last season, but Dorsey missed four games last season with a similar injury.
His player profile was almost immediately wiped off the Texas Sports.com website after the announcement this morning.
Speculation aside on the reasons for his departure, Texas is losing experience at the DT position with Dorsey’s departure. Sophmore Malcolm Brown and senior Chris Whaley will start at the position and junior Desmond Jackson and freshman Hassan Ridgeway will be thrown into the mix for playing time as well. Bishop Dunne product and redshirt freshman Alex Norman could also see playing time this season at defensive tackle.
