Texas running back Keaontay Ingram and linebacker Anthony Wheeler each sustained injuries during the Tulsa game and were unable to return. Ingram suffered what head coach Tom Herman described as a “knee deal” while getting tackled and will be further evaluated on Sunday, while Wheeler was poked in the eye and had trouble focusing.

Ingram finished the night with 10 carries for 64 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown run. The true freshman and highly regarded recruiting prospect from Carthage, Texas is averaging 6.3 yards per carry through two games.

Ingram, who was listed behind graduate transfer Tre Watson and Daniel Young on the Depth Chart, is quickly making his case for a promotion. Watson led the team in rushing with 18 carries for 75 yards while Young rushed 3 times for 41 yards. Young’s role appears to be evolving into one that is situational. In his postgame press conference, Herman referenced Young’s insertion into the game in the 4th quarter for plays in which Texas needed to pick up a first down and burn clock:

“We put Daniel Young in because we knew we were going to run the quarterback sweep on third and one. We wanted him to be the lead blocker…..  And then we kept him in because he’s kind of our goal line short yardage back and we needed to grid the clock out.”

Wheeler, a senior, led the team in tackles (7) against the Golden Hurricane and has 13 total tackles on the season.
