The Texas Longhorns didn’t play stellar football by any means on Saturday in Lawrence, but managed to leave town with an important win.
The ‘Horns have a lot to focus on during the week but the team did the best they could given the circumstances. Case McCoy finally had the “Case McCoy” type of game that we all knew was coming…. one where he wasn’t even “average.” Sure he had some nice throws but those were overshadowed by the myriad of questionable plays he executed. Now, if Case really feels like he is the starter for this team, he needs to learn from his mistakes – plain and simple. The game plan isn’t going to shock anyone. Texas is going to run the ball and throw short, quick passes. McCoy has to hit on those deep passes when he sees the favorable match-ups and the route is called. He did that well against Oklahoma and TCU. Â That will open up the running game for the horses, Johnathan Gray and Malcolm Brown. When he doesn’t, teams will load the box against Texas like Kansas did on Saturday.
Malcolm Brown has finally become the running back everyone projected him to be in high school – four rushing touchdowns for the big back out of Cibolo High School against KU. Johnathan Gray couldn’t seem to get it going as he ran the ball 18 times for only 68 yards. Magic Mike Davis did his disappearing act against Kansas on Saturday, catching only 1 ball for 5 yards. Daje snagged 7 Â catches for 46 yards and had opportunities to make plays but the Kansas defense kept him bottled up for most of the game.
Again, it’s a solid win. Now that Texas has survived and advanced to stay alive in the Big 12 championship race, it’s time to scoreboard watch and root for the results they need to keep the dream alive.
Other College Football Week 10 thoughts:Â
– Wow, Nebraska’s Hail Mary was awesome to watch. Now, I didn’t watch it live because I don’t channel surf that often but I should have.Â
. I know Nebraska fans probably don’t read Horn Sports but if you have any family or friends that are Huskers, please remind them that this isn’t the 1980s or 1990s anymore. College football has changed drastically since the golden era of Cornhusker football. Sure, they may have a magical season here and there but they’ll never be a force in the national championship race again.
– Brace yourself for a darkhorse candidate for the next Texas head coach. Mark Dantonio. He was the defensive coordinator for the 2002 national champion Ohio State Buckeyes. He always has a good defense at Michigan State and when he has a capable quarterback, he has a really good team. Not to mention winning at Michigan State is extremely difficult when you have to fight Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan for recruits. He is only 57 so I would think he would get an interview for the job. He could do real damage at UT.
– Texas Tech. Thanks for playing. I know most fans of Big 12 teams weren’t sold on the Red Raiders but now we know they won’t be a serious contender for the Big 12 title.
– I hope one of the top four teams in the BCS loses. Having potentially 4 undefeated teams (maybe 5 if Baylor can stay undefeated) would be a huge mess. I know that it always seems to work out in the end but if I am a fan of one of those undefeated teams, I would be more nervous about the rest of the season than excited.
– I know most of the thoughts are about the games already played but I’m really excited about a game with Baylor in it for the first time in my life. I know this might sound crazy, but I think Texas fans should root for a Sooners victory. Texas has the tie breaker and if the Sooners can beat the Bears, they might provide a game-plan on how to stop Baylor. And they say the Big 12 isn’t exciting anymore…
