On Wednesday, the Longhorns will look to put a bow on their 2022 recruiting class by potentially adding another blue-chip prospect. Today, we discuss the three main players that the Longhorns are fighting for on National Signing Day.
Even though the Longhorns already have six pledges on the offensive line in their 2022 recruiting class, five-star offensive lineman Devon Campbell could potentially become the class’s crown jewel. According to the 247Sports Composite, Campbell is the ninth-ranked player in the nation’s 2022 recruiting cycle and is the top-ranked interior offensive lineman.
The race for Devon Campbell is down to just two programs, Oklahoma and Texas. However, it appears that Campbell is leaning towards Texas as he is the recipient of five 247Sports crystal ball predictions in favor of the Longhorns. Additionally, the fact that Campbell has been heavily recruited by the Longhorns for a couple of years now certainly does not hurt their chances either. With all of that said, Campbell still has to put pen to paper on National Signing Day.
Along with the offensive line, linebacker was a position of need for the Longhorns in 2021. As a result, a surprise commitment from 2022 five-star linebacker Harold Perkins, out of Cypress Park, would be a huge Signing Day victory for Texas. Like Campbell, Perkins is highly-regarded by recruiting sites, being listed as the second-ranked linebacker and eight-ranked player overall in the nation’s 2022 recruiting cycle by the 247Sports Composite.
However, unlike Campbell, the Longhorns appear to be on the outside looking in for Perkins. Despite taking multiple visits to the Forty Acres during his senior season, programs such as Florida, LSU and Texas A&M all remain in contention for Perkins’s services. But, one thing to know about Perkins is that his recruitment has always been a wildcard, so expect the unexpected.
Similar to Perkins, 2022 four-star safety Jacoby Matthews is not necessarily a player that you should expect the Longhorns to land on National Signing Day, but crazier things have happened. The native of Ponchatoula, Louisiana is the second-ranked safety in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite and should be seen as LSU’s to lose. However, besides from LSU, programs such as Florida, Texas and Texas A&M are very well in the mix.
