Following their First Four loss to Xavier in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, Rodney Terry’s future on the 40 Acres as head basketball coach was a hot topic of discussion amongst Longhorn fans. On Sunday, it appears Terry’s fate has been sealed, with multiple reports stating the University of Texas has fired him after three seasons at the helm in Austin.
Terry, a longtime assistant coach at Texas under former head coach Rick Barnes, took over as the interim coach following Chris Beard’s arrest for domestic violence. That season he reached the Elite Eight before losing to Miami in the Regional Final. In his next two seasons as head coach, Terry’s teams lost in the Round of 32 to Tennessee and to Xavier in the First Four, respectively.
Terry’s record at Texas finishes at 62-37. The Longhorns went 6-12 in the Southeastern Conference this year, their first season in the league. HE signed a 5-year, $15.3 million contract in 2023 and has a buyout of $5.4 million.
The search for Terry’s replacement is ongoing with Xavier head coach Sean Miller’s name being circulated as a leading candidate for the job. Kansas Coach Bill Self is another name the has picked up some momentum.
