Following Texas’ Stars At Night camp last Friday, Everman tight end Juan Davis announced his commitment to the Longhorns and stated that he would be taking his talents to Austin, TX.

Davis represents the fifth Longhorn commitment for the 2021 recruiting class and kept the fireworks coming for what has been a very productive July on the recruiting trail for the Longhorn coaching staff.

Davis is the second tight end commitment for the 2021 class joining Lake Travis tight end Lake McRee, who committed earlier in the month.

Summary

Juan Davis is a 3-star an ‘athlete’ prospect out Everman, TX that has logged snaps at both wide receiver and quarterback to this point in his development. Davis has split time between the two positions, but looks to be moving forward as a wide out as things sit currently. At 6’4, 217 pounds, Davis possesses good size and has a frame that will likely hold more mass as he continues to mature and fill out. Given his current measurables, the projected move to tight end is no out of the question down the line. As a pass catcher, Davis’ best trait is his ability high point the football on 50/50 balls down the field. Davis shows a knack for being able to time his leaps and being able to elevate above defenders. Davis shows solid elusiveness at times for his size, but I would like to see it more consistently moving forward. Davis also flashes a solid set of hands despite being relatively new to the position, which is encouraging given that he has split time between positions. As a route runner, Davis is still very much a work in progress. On tape, Davis runs a very small amount of routes off the route tree, which includes several bubble screens and other short routes while mixing some vertical routes down the field. While this isn’t uncommon given Davis’ cross training and newness to the position, it is something that will need to be greatly improved to maximize his ability. Davis’ tape is also pretty void of blocking attempts, which is something worth monitoring regardless if he ends up being a jumbo wide out or tight end long term at the next level. At minimum I will need to see that he possesses the willingness and the demeanor to be a blocker on the perimeter or inline. Overall, Davis is a pretty raw developmental prospect at this stage in the process, but there is still a lot of untapped upside given he still has so much to learn playing the position.

Final Verdict

It didn’t take very long for Texas tight ends coach Derek Warehime to find his guys for the 2021 recruiting cycle. With guys like Davis and McRee, Warehime has two rock solid takes that still have plenty of upside to be tapped into. Given how the past couple of cycles have played out at tight end, the staff was able to address their needs at the position aggressively and now they are able to close up shop with two in-state talents

To say that the 2021 class is off to a fast start would be severely understating it at this point. The staff has clearly switched up their philosophy and decided to come out aggressive and get early momentum going on the recruiting trail. With guys like Jalen Milroe and Hayden Conner hitting the ground running as active recruiters, it is looking like we could potentially see some more fireworks as the month of July comes to a close.
