Texas Head Coach Mack Brown met with the media at his usual Monday press conference coming off a 44-23 loss to Ole Miss Saturday night. The internet had been abuzz with rumors of the retirement announcement fans are clamoring for coming today, but it failed to occur.
Nothing of major interest changed on the depth chart headed into this weekends game against Kansas State, a team Texas has not beaten in a decade. Kennedy Estelle is listed as the co starter at right tackle with Josh Cochran coming off injury. Dalton Santos is still there as a co starter with Steve Edmond at middle linebacker. RB Daje Johnson is out for the KSU game, and QB David Ash is questionable, but hopefully will practice Tuesday. WR Mike Davis is questionable but should practice Tuesday. OG Mason Walters and RT Josh Cochran are “day to dayâ€.
The actual presser was a mix of the Mack speak we’ve all grown accustomed to, a few nuggets, and a bit of “I don’t know†mixed in. Let’s get to the highlights:
Brown said “I can’t blame fans for anything they say or do. I’m asking them to support the players.” Later Brown accused the media of planting thoughts in kids heads and said he doesn’t listen to what kids say, even thought just last week he addressed a tweet from an Aggie player.
Brown said “I’m gonna stay positive; I’m going to stay upbeat, because I think we can get this thing turned around.” He went on to say the team was “not splitting, but fightingâ€, and as long as they did so the staff would continue to coach them. Brown also made the comment he thought coaches and players “may be trying too hardâ€.
When specifically asked what gave him hope he could turn things around Brown said “The players are tryingâ€.
On Defensive Coordinator Greg Robinson: Brown said he was “brought in for the Big 12â€, and also said he thought the defense would be vastly improved with six days to prepare instead of three.
Brown speaking on what the defense had to fix: “Stop the option. My goodness–the defensive line is playing well. It’s outside we have to fix.” He said he felt no one was “getting yards off tackleâ€.
Brown praised Bill Snyder for what he has done at Kansas State. Normal pleasantries you’d expect from Mack toward any coach and team.
Statement of the Presser: Brown on the last time the football team was 1-2 back in 1998: “We brought in Matthew McConaughey. His message was “a time to kill.” Said he needed to bring him back.
There it is fans. It’s not poor coaching, lack of effort, or lack of toughness. It’s Matthew McConaughey.
Basically fans, that’s about it. Stay tuned……
