On Friday, the Akins Eagles traversed their way through the hills of Westlake to take on a Chaparrals team that is undefeated so far this season. Unfortunately for Akins, the Eagles themselves cannot say the same thing as they have stumbled to an 0-2 record out of the gate.
While Westlake does not currently have any recruits that are vying for the top spots of popular recruiting rankings, the Chaparrals are full of Division 1 talent. However, the season is still young for the Chaparrals and it seems like every year there is at least one under-the-radar type of player that climbs up the recruiting boards and, lately, finds themselves committing to the Longhorns. In fact, one notable alum who fit that bill, current freshman Longhorns defensive lineman Colton Vasek, happened to be watching the game from the sidelines on Friday.
For Westlake, I will continue to harp on the fact that I believe that senior Jack Kayser is one of the best running backs in the state of Texas. While he may be undersized for recruiting standards, listed at 5’8″, the Army commit simply has a knack for finding the end zone. Entering Saturday’s game, Kayser had tallied a total of 58 touchdowns throughout his Westlake career. On Friday, Kayser added another two touchdowns to his already sizable career totals.
At quarterback for Westlake, the Chaparrals trotted out senior Paxton Land who has collected a few offers from schools such as Georgetown and San Diego. Land, who stands in at 6’5″, had an efficient night for the Chaparrals, tossing a pair of touchdown passes in the first half while abstaining from the turnover column. Additionally, Westlake also rolled out sophomore quarterback Rees Wise who will try to position himself as the starting quarterback for the Chaparrals next season. Wise is shorter than Land, listed at 6’1″, but also had no problem picking his spots and hurting the Eagles defense with a first half touchdown pass of his own.
Lastly, Westlake senior athlete Nathan Acosta also had a solid performance on Friday out of the backfield. Acosta, who served as a change-of-pace back when Kayser was getting some rest, also had himself a touchdown rush in Westlake’s 64-0 win over Akins. The senior has a solid frame for a running back, mixed with a decent element of speed, and could be an interesting addition for a college football roster.
Extra Point:
Unfortunately, I did not get to see Colton Vasek’s younger brother, Conner, in action on Friday. Westlake’s junior defensive end was in street clothes on the sideline but I hope to get to see him suited up soon.
Westlake’s next opponent, Lake Travis, will most likely be their toughest test during the regular season. Many eyes, including mine, will certainly be focusing on this year’s Battle of the Lakes matchup.
