Following an underwhelming performance by the Texas offense against Ohio State, Arch Manning came into Saturday’s game against San Jose State on a mission. Manning and the Longhorns responded by scoring four passing touchdowns in the team’s 38-7 victory over the Spartans.
However, it was impossible to ignore the criticisms surrounding Arch Manning after his Week One performance. Against the Buckeyes, Manning threw for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the team’s 14-7 loss. But against San Jose State, it was a different story. Manning passed for 295 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. While there’s still room for improvement, Manning showed glimpses of his potential. On the receiving end, wide receiver Parker Livingstone and tight end Jack Endries each hauled in two touchdowns.
Speaking of Livingstone, his first touchdown might have been the offensive play of the game. With 2:52 remaining in a scoreless first quarter, he used his speed to break away for an 83-yard touchdown reception. Through the season’s first two games, Livingstone has already tallied three touchdowns and is emerging as an early candidate for the team’s breakout player.
Although the storylines will largely focus on Arch, it’s the Longhorns’ defense that continues to shine. In Week Two, the Texas defense forced four turnovers, including two forced fumbles by Anthony Hill Jr. As a unit, the defense allowed just 273 total yards to the Spartans. However, as the number of turnovers indicates, the defense stepped up when it mattered most.
Next weekend, the Longhorns will host the UTEP Miners. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 PM (CT) in a game that will be televised on the SEC Network.
