Ignore screw it, i'll be the bad guy: The problem with Watson Reply

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is that he would be a very hard sell to Texas high School offensive recruits over Briles, Patterson, Sumlin, Gundy, Stoops or even Kliff Kingsberry. VERY hard sell. There's nothing exciting about his offenses. He has no Texas ties at all. None. There is literally nothing about the guy's resume that qualities him for this hire. It was his offense at Nebraska that kept them from winning something significant. He basically backed into that position at UL when Sanford couldn't get anything going.

This could potentially end up being a total disaster hire for a head coach needing to get this right. As far as Watson's abilities, i think he's an average coordinator. What I don't like about him is that he's too multiple. He's up tempto and then he's not. He's under center and then he's not. You don't see the top coordinators do this. They have a theory about what they want to do and they do it. How many times do you see OU in a bunch formation? Or not run their uptempo offense especially early? They don't because they know what they want to do and they go do it. Sound familiar? It should, because this is what's been the problem with Texas over the past 3 years. No offensive flow. No excitement. No identity on offense.

UL scored 20 points against Houston and 24 against Memphis. This with a Heisman level QB under center. His offenses are the definition of boring and conservative.

I say this as a fan. Not as someone who expects Watson to be the guy. But the Texas QB situation is a mess right now and we need a top notch guy to come in and get these young guys ready to play. But as far as recruiting goes, it's hard to imagine top recruits on offense coming to play for Watson.

EM frequently forgets his place. It's not his choice. It's Charlie's. He's no better than Red with his critique.

I like him too, but even his offense was ranked lower than watson's this year
Yeah but I think the issue has more to do with style of offense more than anything else. I don't care if Strong hires the OC from Blinn personally. As long as said coordinator runs an offense that Texas recruits can get excited about.

Bama plays a "boring" style of offence, they recruit well on that side of the ball...stop over reacting guys, it's not about being the good guy, or the bad guy...just because you as a fan is not excited about the style does not mean a recruit can't be, what kind of offense did you think Saben, Jimbo, and Shaw run? Their teams are doing okay. I'm hoping it someone else just because he would come in w far too many horn fans who have their mind made up, but if it's him, then get to work. This team is going to have to depend on the run game no matter what style it plays because the QB position is not great.

Saban, Jimbo, and Shaw seem to recruit more nationally, and recruits know what they are getting with Saban. Strong wants to "lock down" Texas. Texas HSs run a lot of spread offenses, so I think we need to create some excitement much like Briles and Sumlin are doing.

All I can say is Charlie needs to get this right. Someone should tell him what happened to Mackovic when he was given a blank check and told to hire the best DC out there and didn't.

I am all for chances but as his records shows -- he has failed in the big 12 (OC at Nebraska). It is all about recruiting and as EM says, it is very hard to get players to play for a coach whose playcall is considered "very conservative" even to GDGD's standards.

It is a risky move to put Watson as OC whereas Patterson is advising against hiring him.

everyone is an expert. I dont wish for UT to hire Watson, but I would bet 90% of the UT fanbase didnt even see UL play more than a game last year.....yet already have their system broken down and know exactly what they did or didnt do and how that would translate to UT. Whatever

Dizz he was Barnett's OC as CU and Pellini's at NU. I think the fans have seen enough of his to know they should be concerned.

I don't see dual threat qbs coming without a more wide open offense. Also, having a similar offense to the rest of the league gives the defense the ability to better prepare for conference play

Who cares if he mocked Colt...who cares if Briles voted Texas down..it's a competition and gamesmanship...our fan base reflects the softness that the team is often characterized as having. But! luckily, as Coach Strong indicated..if something is soft, you can make it hard..
