The guy is a legendary player, has years of success and NFL experience and has openly expressed his desire to coach at his alma mater! Not saying he should be the head coach but at least consideration for DC?

He had that shot 3 years ago and passed for the NFL. He would probably be the DC right now had he stayed. Though I understand why he left, as he thought Manny's defense was a joke.

I'd leave too if I was offered an NFL job.

Because he's not a good DC?

The only way I want him as DC is if I knew Strong was going to be running the defense. If not give me someone who has actually been successful as a DC before. Unless Gregg Williams is coming with him no thanks.

Strong, Bedford and Gray on the defensive side?
We could do worse.
Bedford and Gray coach the same position, and it seems Bedford is pretty good at coaching college DB's. We have no info. on Gray at the college level. I'm not in favor of hiring someone to coach a position they have never coached before.

Not if coaching at your alma mater is your stated dream.
If I'm a defensive backs coach at my alma mater, then yes, I would leave if an NFL team offered me a higher position in their organization.

Turn the question around. . ..if he didn't play at TEXAS . ..would his name even come up?

Jerry Gray is an exceptionally good defensive coach and person. I'd love it if he came home to help us out of this mess.

Not sure. It helps bring his name out among the hundreds of possibilities. You don't get to be a DC in the NFL if you can't coach. Period. a coach may not have success for many reasons (both the coach's fault and not his fault) but they ALL know the game.

Is it possible he took a DC job in the NFL because Brown told him no on the DC job and then brought in Diaz... Maybe he new something the rest of us didn't at that time.

Does Patterson get the nod if he didn't go to Texas? Come on now, its a Texas alum that is a DC in the pros. Giving him a little look makes some sense here.

Gray was the DC for a week or so, then the Titans offered him DC job and Gray left. Then Mack brought Diaz in.

Jerry Gray was the defensive backs coach after Akina left, and then Gray left to take over the DC position for the Titans.
