Why is Texas recruiting Dual Threat QB's?

Mack has made it known that he wants an Alabama style offense with a Boise St feel to it. So my question is, why does Texas continue to recruit the dual threat QB?

Two words:

I agree, but then it totally contradicts what Mack wants. Why did he get rid of Greg Davis then. I have argued for years that the worst thing Mack Brown does at Texas is handcuff the offense. He is a former OC and Texas has long suffered from an identity crisis on the offensive side. So is Texas going back to spread zone read?

Greg Davis has been hanging on by a thread for years. Then along came VY and extended his life at Texas 5 more years. NEver been impressed with Greg Davis and his "sideways passing academy." Mack needs to let HarsinWhite run the offense.

I will say this, I have been critical of Greg Davis many times, but he is a great offensive coach. What he did to transform the Texas offense with VY then to Colt was awesome.

Couldn't stand him as our OC.

He has his times, but the finger needs to be pointed less at Greg Davis and more at Mack Brown.

I'm not a Mack homer by any means and I will agree with you but the two of them together was no good. The friendship carried the professional relationship on much too long at Texas.

Great guy, mediocre coach, second-to-none recruiter.

Bama style is run first, run second, run third and pass if you have to. We have the backs to do that but Ash must keep the defense honest.

I agree. I still don't know what the offensive identity of Texas is right now thru 1 season and a spring of the Harsin/Applewhite Project.

The offensive identity should be this: hand the ball to Bergeron, hand it to Bergeron again, David Ash qb sneak and hand it off to Bergeron on 4th down for any remaining yardage needed. I say we go Mike Leach on the Big XII this year and go for it on every 4th down in which we need 10 yards or less.

One thing that has confused me some is that Harsin claims to favor an athletic QB and can pull the ball now and make yards when needed. That doesn't describe Kellen Moore at all.

UTK66 you bring up a good point. Harsin is relatively new but we need to see progress with David Ash and the offense this year. Harsin had Zabransky for 2 years at Boise before working with Moore in 2008. Texas recruits better than Boise State. We need to visibly see improvement on the field this year.

There are two Greg Davis'. One is the guy no one can stand and then there is the genius that I see.

Items:

UT has had 4 QB's play in the NFL and 2 have come under Davis

Under his guidance, the Longhorns have has produced 10 of the top 11 passing seasons, 11 of the top 13 total yardage campaigns and the top nine scoring years in school history.

Texas averaged 39.0 points per game in the last decade (2000-09), which ranked second nationally and first among BCS conference schools.

The Horns averaged at least 35 ppg in nine of the 10 seasons, including three seasons of at least 40 ppg. In 2005, UT set a then-NCAA record with 652 total points and a school record by averaging 50.2 ppg.

Things have dropped off because of a lack of a quality QB and last season the top 3 RB's missed most of the season.

He has his critics but his numbers don't lie. He is a great OC and IMHO does not deserve the criticism.

Harsin has made it clear that a dual threat QB could be integrated into his offense. I depends on the individual.....for instance, Ash can have some nice scrambles now and again but his running will never be a focal point of the game plan. BUT when Harsin sees film of someone like Swoopes, his mind starts dancing with visions of misdirection coming from fake hand-offs and Tyrone running the opposite way for a 60 yard TD against OU.

So is this Harsin's offense? I ask that because Mack continues to express his desire to have a power down hill running game. I will be interested to see if Mack continues to tinker with the offense.
