Why don't college coaches recruit PLAYERS instead of potential athletes?

So many times college coaches recruit players that couldn't play dead in a western but yet they look good in combines. He is too short, or he doesn't weigh enough.... Ego's often stand in the way of success, when they think they can do something with a great athlete that a high school coach couldn't do in 4 years. Look at TCU, and now A&M.

A bit of an over reaction. Hard to make a judgement out of one season. The race does not always go to the swift or the battle to the strong but it is the way to bet.

I look at Agie..they didn't win the SEC..they didn't win the Big XII last season and I am not ready to proclaim them the next dynasty..

Well said... I was conflicted in tonights game. I pull for state of Texas teams when they are playing anybody but our Longhorns. Don't like seeing our statesman wearing "SEC" on their chests. Your'e right, one season does not make or break a team. However, 4 does.

I think this is the reason Larry Porter was brought in. We need FOOTBALL PLAYERS in Austin not just blue chip "prospects." Sometimes they are one in the same and sometimes they are far from alike. The state of Texas has so many players in small towns that are phenomenal athletes and never get a chance because a scouting service deems them 2 inches two short or 20 lbs underweight or .3 seconds too slow in a .40 yd. This is hogwash. Teams like TCU and Baylor eats this kids up while Texas fails to recruit them or wants them to play cornerback or return kicks. We need a new paradigm on recruiting. It is difficult to do, I know but we need a new gameplan. Helll, we only have 13 scholly offers out right now for a class that closes next month. We can offer 6 more scholarships easily and not lose sleep.

Exactly the point I was going to make..Why not take some of those scholarships and give them to the over achiever types. Guys who are specialists at one or two things. Give me a back that can't be stopped for one yard and I give you a guy who will win games. Give me a guy to run the Wildcat and I give you a guy who will win games. Give me a slow guy who can only get open and catch everything that is thrown and I will give you a guy who can win games.

The Longhorns recruited some players who were 4 star and never saw the field. What is the use of stacking players at one position. How many RB's that don't play do you need. He might be taking a DL or OL position that a kid can grow into? Just saying
