Make no mistake, this is one hundred percent a "what if" thread as I have no tangible proof to suggest what I'm about to say is true. But what if, we've all been more or less duped by Mack Brown and Texas? One of the biggest conversation topics throughout the last month was how Mack wanted it to look like he had some control over the future coach decisions. He wanted to maintain his pride and dignity on his way out. So what if Saban's extension and Mack's announcement afterwards was their way of finally convincing everyone that Mack was calling the shots? Think about it for a second. Aren't we all pretty much convinced that any coach we get will have had the blessing of Brown and Co.? Aren't we all pretty much convinced that Saban backed off because Mack hadn't given the approval for the move? Could it be possible that Texas, Mack, Saban and Sexton just pulled the wool over our eyes? Now if Saban did in fact end up coming to Texas, it would look like he did so with Mack's blessing and permission. Therefore making a hero of sorts out of Mack Brown and saving his reputation. Now it's not Mack being pushed out in favor of Saban, it's Mack stepping down and bringing Saban to Texas as his successor.
I'm not saying this is the case at all. Odds are, I'm completely wrong. And this also isn't some last grab at hope for Saban, I'm already more or less resigned to the fact that we'll have to focus on someone else. It's just a short thought I had, so I'm speculating and opening it up for discussion.
