A huge night of college football that changed the landscape of the 2013 season and 2014 recruiting. Here is my thoughts on Thursday night.
1. Texas's coaching search should only be 3 candidates long. Art Briles, Nick Saban and David Shaw. Start at $4 million/year and go up from there. Go up until one says yes. I know every doubter will say their connection to the schools they are currently at is too strong but money and resources talk. Coaching is a tough industry and one year you could be on top of the world and the next you're on the hot seat. These coaches know that and will take offers that will benefit their families and prolong their college coaching careers. One of them will accept that job.
2. In the Fox postgame, one of the analysts mention that Baylor has knocked of Texas as the top program in the State of Texas. I can't disagree with that statement. Baylor and Texas A&M are the "it" schools in the state right now. Texas still has the mystique and prestige that comes with an elite university and athletics program. But the cool factor is with the Baylor Bears and the Texas A&M Aggies.
3. Oregon. Oregon. Oregon. You can blow out weaker opponents but when it comes to opponents that have the players to stay with you the entire game, you lose. Sometimes the older generation did have it right the first time. Playing great defense and running the ball is the key to championships.
4. The BCS picture just became more clear but if the SEC wants to win 8 straight championships, it's going to have to be Alabama. Missouri is having an outstanding year but I don't see them beating the Aggies. Auburn might sneak up to the top 2 but I doubt it. Florida State, Baylor and Stanford all are fighting for that chance to be in that game so any slip up in the SEC for Alabama will end their 7 straight national championships.
