Weimar senior running back JaKyle Harris rushed for 75 yards in Friday's 45-0 District 13-1A, Division I win at Thrall.

On Monday night, Harris, 18, was in the Fayette County Jail, charged with first-degree murder.

Harris was one of three people arrested following a shooting early Sunday morning at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in La Grange, according to a news release issued by the La Grange Police Department.

Harris was charged with shooting Dustin Donovan Smith, 19, of New Ulm.

Smith, who suffered a shotgun wound to the back, died at St. Mark's Medical Center in La Grange.

He was pronounced dead by Fayette County Justice of the Peace Scott Parker.

Harris is also charged with shooting Quinton Harris, age unknown, of Sealy, in the arm, according to the release.

Quinton Harris was taken to Columbus Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The arrests were made in Colorado County by members of the La Grange Police Department, Weimar Police Department and Texas Rangers.

The other two suspects in the case, whose names were not released, were taken to the Colorado County Jail.

Police did not release the details of what led to the shooting or if the people involved knew one another.

Weimar athletic director and head football coach David Husmann declined to talk about Harris' arrest when reached by phone Monday night.

"I have no comment," he said. "We didn't even discuss it with our players."

Parker set the bond for JaKyle Harris at $750,000. He remained in jail Monday night.

Also assisting in the investigation were the Fayette County Sheriff's Office and the Columbus Police Department.

its very sad to see what people are doing now, back in the day when you had a problem with someone you worked it out or just fought, now days its just shooting/cutting

This goes way beyond pathetic. I have no clue why his Friday night game stats are in the article as if they are supposed to show a "human" side to the piece of crap.

He shot a person in the BACK w/ a shotgun!!! Bond? Are you kidding me, it was in the BACK!!!

No matter the reason as to why the argument/disagreement escalated...it was in the BACK!!!
