It appears as though Chris Petersen (Boise State) and former OC and current Alabama OC Doug Nussmeier have emerged as the favorites for the job.

You'd have to think that Saban losing his OC to a head coaching job in addition to all of the graduating and NFL draft eligible players he'd have to replace might make help make his decision...

Nussmeier was Washington OC, but you'd still think Washington would want try to land Kirby Smart if they go after a Bama coach.

Will Petersen leave Boise? I thought he wouldn't even look at Oregon, and that he does not like large cities.

One fact is this:

Saban is not confident in his QB next year. They're still not sure who that QB is going to be, as no one has stepped up and emerged as the Guy. That doesn't come from the UT side. That comes from following Bama thr past year.

If you have unrealistic expectations, now may be a perfect time to leave.

I am one that is a little skeptical of him leaving.

He isn't even one of my top 3 candidates.

But there are way more reasons Saban would want to make this move right now than not make this move right now. That is where the doubters are missing the point (as well as not realizing where some of these ppl are getting their info from - McPhaul has legit sources and I believe Jesus and Aidensdad both do as well).

I think Saban has made his decision to sign on the Texas Contract line...............I believe Saban will be at Texas before the 16th of December, 2013 and he needs to hire his other coaches

and start recruiting.

Not sure if Petersen would leave Boise. But his name is always going to come up for open west coast jobs.

If Kirby Smart turned down the jobs he has in the SEC and others, he's not leaving for Washington. Especially with all the Saban rumors going around when he's more than likely the heir apparent there. Not sure if Nussmeier would be the ideal fit for Washington, but not a bad first time job for someone.

Call me crazy but I like Petersen as a potential hire for us...I know some think the shine has worn off but he's got an impressive resume.

On another note I wonder if Saban would look at Dan Mullen as an OC here were he to take the job and if Mullen gets fired. Mullen was a great OC for urban.

Cossell, I may have missed it but what does your list look like? I am figuring Urban and Chip Kelly are the top two.

I think Petersen is a very good coach, but what worries me is the lack of success the other Boise guys like Hawkins and Koetter had previously when they left and the lack of success Harsin had here and Pease had at Florida. Maybe it's because Petersen is the common denominator that made everyone so good, but that is a concern.

I'd literally sh*t my pants if we hired Saban and brought Mullen on as his OC. I think sh*t my pants is an understatement regarding how excited and happy that I would be. He might not be having the greatest career at Miss State, but his credentials as an OC are second to none. A lot of people raised eyebrows at how much Meyer struggled at Florida after Mullen left. Unfortunately I think Miss State's win over Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl probably saved his job for one more season. Wouldn't mind being wrong.

I think Petersen runs a pretty tough culture. A lot of people compare him to Mack but to me he's very different. I think in retrospect Harsin succeeded with what he had and he left to take a job sight unseen because he realized the culture was tougher at Boise than it was at Texas. I'm not saying take him above everyone else, but I wouldn't be quick to write him off either. He's a different cat than Hawkins

No thanks re: Petersen. Far too much risk and far too much evidence on the table suggesting these Boise products dont do well once they leave the area.

I've never liked this argument that because others from there haven't succeeded that he can't. To me it's a bit of a lazy argument. It's like saying all players from Texas have the country club culture and the busts from there should prevent NFL teams from drafting Texas players. Petersen took what his predecessors built and he took the next step with it.

If true, how would the Bowl game coaching happen as well as Mack's and Nick's office situation be handled?

Might be a bit awkward at Belmont

Here's the deal:

This is the University of Texas, and along with it, the most critical coaching hire in the programs history. We can't afford a "roll of the dice" candidate. We need to be as sure as humanly possible the next guy is the THE guy.

Petersen has a body of work similar to the guys before him. Those guys have left and failed. Harsin is a poor eval of Boise potential because he was probably hamstrung here, but he did not do all that well. The overwhelming evidence, right now, is Broncos hot commodities dont perform at that level once they leave the unique situation that is Boise ID.

You can call it lazy if you want, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

I like Petersen but he hasn't had to work in the pressure cooker that is Austin. So no telling how he responds to that. Add to that he hasn't shown he can recruit at a elite level so I think there are just too many unknowns for him at a place like Texas.

There are 2 guys (possibly 3 if you count Shaw which I do) out there that aren't "roll the dice" hires. I know everyone is high on the saban pipe right now, but if that doesn't happen and we don't hire urban meyer we are most definitely rolling the dice. I agree that this is a crucial decision that has to be done right, but we need to also prepare for the possibility it's not a done deal. Again, I'm not saying I want Petersen to be at the top of that list but I wouldn't write him off either.

Ok...for the sake of argument Ill give you that, but if I have to "Roll the Dice", Im not going to roll them with that kind of warning sign staring me in the face. I could be 100% wrong and if he came and won a title Id personally smooch his hairy ass on the platform as he held the Crystal Football, but Im standing by saying it would be a bad idea to go there.

Well, how about for fun you give me a list of guys you like over Petersen and i'll try to make a case for him
