I have been receiving phone calls that had it's call forwarding number blocked.  I know many of you have as well - typically it will look like this -  "Unavailable 1".

ATT has a neat little feature that, for $8.00, will trace the call that only the local police dept. can identify.  And one of the advantages of playing golf with a noted member of the local police dept. was he was able to trace this call for me.

Anyway, I received a call this AM from some guy saying he was my grandson and was in Mexico City.  Of course we knew this to be untrue and when we asked his name - he hung up.

To make a long story short, the call was traced and it appears the call came from a number traced to a person (s) that is suspiciously associated with one of these blogs.  Tracing his name, background  and affiliations indicates this to be the case.  I will soon know for sure as the police are investigating.

Although I am sure I have revealed way too much about myself already, I have always been very careful to remain anonymous about my name, family names, addresses, etc.

Just a friendly warning to always be careful about your identity - you never know what someones agenda may be and their dedication to finding out who you are..

I saw a story about this on the evening news. They call up people and try to convince them that they are a grandchild broken down across the country by saying things like "this is your favorite Grandson" or something like that. Then they get you to go to the bank and wire them money.

The last couple of days we've been receiving calls from telemarketers and the number and name on the caller ID is our own. I read a story about this as well and apparently it's not illegal...just frustrating.

I don't answer the phone if I don't recognize the number. And I don't have voicemail. Solves a lot of problems.

whoa.. that's kind of scary

That is scary Doc. But in other news, if you are looking for another grandson to give money to then I would like to apply. 😃

LOL!  As it finally turned out, it doesn't appear to actually come from some blog.  The suspicion that it did was because the dudes cell phone calls were investigated.  That's about all I can say right now.

I did learn that if you want Anonymous Call Blocking on your phone, all you have to do is is dial *77#.  This will block callers that have blocked their caller ID - at least with my phone service.

Are you on Verizon by chance?

I hate it when people call and I look at caller ID and it says "Blocked." I simply don't answer. Concealing your identity is no way to start off a conversation and you're really not wanting to talk to me very bad doing that.

I'm the same way. I provide my phone but our company pays my bill. If I get a call from a number I don't recognize or that I don't have stored in my contacts, that call doesn't get answered. I let it go to VM and then if its some BS, I block the #.

I, too, let blocked calls go to VM.  Legitimate callers will leave a message, and others will just hang up.  From time to time, I do get legitimate calls with a blocked number, rare, but it happens.

I just got rid of my home phone and got a Magic Jack.  Ported the home number to it.  It works great.  Any call that I used to get on my home phone just goes to Magic Jack voicemail and I can check it at my leisure.  Costs about 35 bucks a year with the $10 phone number port charge.

I just sent a Nigerian Missionary $1,500 deposit for a 3 bedroom apartment in Rio.  He said he would be sending me the keys for my upcoming vacation.  He's a missionary, seems legit, right?  Hahaha ;)

And yes, i am just kidding!
