Don't look now, it's already Week 6 - here's W2W4 this week.
By: Chris Flanagan
We are one third of the way through the season. Here is a recap of Week 5:
Kansas fires Charlie Weis
The biggest takeaway from the weekend was the firing of Kansas coach Charlie Weis. Weis went 6-22 at Kansas. Turner Gill did very poorly at Kansas as well. Kansas is now in their 5th season of putrid football.
I doubt Kansas will reach out to Mark Mangino who is the Iowa State offensive coordinator. He was one of the few coaches to have sustained success at Kansas. Keep an eye out for Glen Mason. He is only 64 and he had a great 10 year run at Kansas. I would expect Kansas to at least gauge his interest.
Oklahoma State struggles early but beats Texas Tech.
If Oklahoma State lost to Texas Tech, it would have looked really bad for the Big 12. Luckily the Cowboys were able to pull off the crucial win not only for their season but for the Big 12. The national media doesn't perceive the Big 12 as a weekly dogfight. Texas Tech is perceived as weak because of their blowout loss to Arkansas, so it was important for one of the better teams to take care of business against an "inferior opponent."
Kansas State dominates UTEP
Kansas State dominating UTEP was a good win for the Big 12. It asserts that Kansas State is in that second tier of Big 12 teams behind Oklahoma and Baylor. It also helps to distinguish who are the potential contenders from the pretenders. Texas Tech struggled with UTEP so that puts Tech in the bottom tier of the conference.
Flanagan's Big 12 Rankings for Week 6.
1. Oklahoma
2. Baylor
3. Kansas State
4. Oklahoma State
5. TCU
6. West Virginia
7. Texas
8. Texas Tech
9. Iowa State
10. Kansas
Analysis:
The first tier is clearly Oklahoma and Baylor. The second tier is Kansas State and Oklahoma State. The third tier is TCU, West Virginia, Texas, and Texas Tech. The bottom tier is Iowa State and Kansas. After the first month of play, that is likely how it will be for the rest of the year.
Big 12 Game of the Week:
Oklahoma at TCU (2:30 CST, FOX)
This game will define how much progress TCU has made this season. They may have been tested against Minnesota but we don't know how good Minnesota will be. We know how good Oklahoma is, so this will give the national media a sense of how tough the Big 12 is this season. If Oklahoma wins but TCU keeps it close, it might not help the Big 12 but we will have to see what will happen going forward.
Other Big 12 games:
Baylor at Texas (2:30 CST, ABC)
Kansas at West Virginia (3:00 CST, FSN)
Iowa State at Oklahoma State (11:00am CST, FS1)
Texas Tech at Kansas State (6:00 CST, ESPNU)
