Vince Young files for bankruptcy

Posted on January 22, 2014 | By David Barron

Vince Young, the former University of Texas and NFL quarterback from Houston who has been involved in a pair of lawsuits stemming from financial issues that arose during the 2011 NFL lockout, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Attorney Brian Kilmer of Houston filed the petition last week in a Houston federal bankruptcy court on Young’s behalf, listing Young with estimated assets between $500,001 and $1 million and liabilities between $1,001,000 and $10 million. No specific details on Young’s assets and liabilities were immediately available.

Over the last year, Young, 30, has been locked in a pair of lawsuits stemming from a $1.8 million loan obtained in his name during the 2011 lockout.

A New York state court has granted a judgment against Young to Pro Player Funding, a New York company that made the loan, which along with interest has grown to more than $2.5 million, according to a Pro Player attorney.

Pro Player Funding has made several efforts in a Harris County state district court to enforce collection of the judgment, but those efforts remain pending.

In the wake of the New York case, Young sued a group that included his former financial adviser, Ronnie Peoples of Raleigh, N.C., and his former agent, Major Adams II of Houston, claiming that the defendants defrauded him and conspired with Pro Player Funding to obtain the loan and that Young himself never received the money in question.

damn. this one is a real story for books. a cautionary tale if there ever was one for guys coming out.

what goes up must eventually come down. good luck, vince.

Best of luck in the future to VY. Perfect example of why these kids need trustworthy, professional advisors.

always makes me so sad! i think 30% of an NFL player's money should go into longterm investments by law. i know this is not very libertarian of me (my natural bent) but this is just FAR too common, particularly for those who are coming from having no money. they are clueless about how to spend it well.

There is an ESPN 30 For 30 on this topic.

About the topic generally, not VY. It's called "Broke."

It is more about the excesses than solutions, but it did show the league, Players Assoc and some teams giving instruction on it now.

It's a pretty long list of interviews. A couple people have criticized it as racist although Bernie Kosar is one of the primary recurring interviews.

One of the biggies besides bad "advisors" was child support obligations.

I'd be surprised if VY really "owned" the steakhouse. Anybody got a review on the place?
he does not own it. he allows use of his name. it is great, btw.

I heard it's very good. Owned by "Mattress Mac" if I'm not mistaken. I believe his daughter or son or in-law is a chef and they're the one's who run it.

I be Vince eats free though.

I'm glad to see he got himself a good bankruptcy lawyer. I'm not confident that Vince will come out this mess with many assets but Kilmer should give him a shot at being able to salvage something.

I took the family to Vince Young Steakhouse Saturday Night. Vince visited every table from what I could tell and he could not have been nicer to everyone. Lots of flashes going off. The meal was great as was the service. Terrible news for Vince. I'm not sure what UT can do or does for its athletes in this regard, but it would be great to know what we could possibly do better. Perhaps an elective in Sports Finances where we pretty much enroll every athlete automatically and emphasize the key things they have to consider.

The NFL does a rookie financial seminar, it may have come a bit too late for VY though - and if players don't take it to heart there's not much you can do.

Let's not forget that people from all income brackets get bad advice, spend too much money and go broke. Athletes just do it more spectacularly because the numbers are bigger and they spend their money on more ridiculous things.

It seems not long ago that a few people on this board were talking about Nick Saban being down to the tune of about $30 mill and that our BMDs were simply going to write him a check to bail him out???

Not exactly bail him out...he was to have earned it by pledging his undying loyalty to UT. Perhaps the size of the loss was overstated as it clearly didn't work...
