UNFORCED ERRORS
Granted normally a tennis term but it describes last night's game to a tee. Another sickening defeat snatched from the jaws of victory and this time, every part of the team except the D. . . . .offense. . . . . . special teams and coaches share the blame. In a game where our very much maligned defense showed up with what we thought we'd see from game one, we saw another winnable game lost due to poor/dumb play. We needed to split the Cal/OSU games at a minimum. . .we could have won them both. . . .instead. .. we lost. . .and in both cases, the losses are 100% on us. OK, D wasn't perfect and made some mistakes but this week they added 14 points and played MORE than well enough to win, forcing Ok Lite into FGs not TDs in short field.
We saw Jerrod Heard come back to earth after one week as super man. He's still a special player but OkState schemed him well. Not sure our offensive staff returned the favor. In a small pat on the cheap seats back, Okie Lite's D schemed him exactly like we thought, play contain, spy JH and try to keep everything in front of them and force TEXAS to drive the field. And they did a great job holding our O to 13 points. But at the end of the day, we could not run the ball and our pass catchers dropped WAY too many passes. . . MJ (think it was MJ) tipped a ball that was intercepted, can't blame that on Heard, Beck had a drop that would have put us in 3rd and short late and Daje bobbled at least 2 passes that were highly catchable. Our running game is also missing in action other than what we saw from the QBs.
16 penalties for 128 yards . . .now 2 of those on Punna Ford were complete BULLCACA (in fact one must have been someone else judging by replay). . . the 2nd lead to CFS STUPIDLY telling off a ref and giving Ok State the ball well inside their kicker's FG range with his D playing well. Of all the penalties, this was the most glaring.. . the Captain of the ship cannot cannot cannot lose his cool. Ball moved from the TEXAS 44 to the TEXAS 19. Just one of at least 10 DUMB penalties. . .often killing drives of ours or keeping OSU drives alive.
Going to say it again, CFS is being WAY too loyal to J Gray who's just not getting it done. Yes he had one GREAT 42 yard run, other than that, he averaged 1.3 ypc. Now one thing I simply do not understand, after using our RBs out of the backfield well last week, where were they this week? And yes, I understand this was the 2nd best D we've faced this year and fortunately might be the best D we see the rest of the way.
OL wasn't as good as last week but they were facing some NFL quality DEs and they are getting beter.
Gotta say, love me some Jerrod Heard. . .he did what he needed to do. Some of his passes were SWEET. The long ball to MJ . .. Swoopes may have a stronger arm, Heard has a better arm. But end of the day he didn't get much help but shout out to Caleb Bluiett for making a great play as our downfield power forward.
Sticking with the positive, excellent use of Tyronne Swoopes in the short yardage role. Big guy, can take some abuse. This is important, thought we leaned FAR too heavily on Heard in the run game early and he looked beat up at the end of the game. Why are we not using the short passing game and our RBs/HBacks in the passing game more. . . we seem a tad too concerned with "chunk" plays and not doing things to spread them out and unload the box.
After being simply abused for 3 weeks. . . .and giving up 2 seemingly easy TD drives to OSU . . .our Defense WOKE THE F*** up in a BIG WAY. OK, it wasn't quite as pretty as Chris Whaley's fumble return vs OU 2 years ago but Hassen Ridgeway scooped up great pressure/strip on Rudolph and rumbled stumbled bumbled 34 yards into the end zone and COMPLETELY changed the way our D played the rest of the way. I only wish I knew what changed. . . .I'd make a fortune bottling it but our D stopped being the 98 pound weakling and started being the bully on the block.
Clearly our D got into Rudolph's head, they would pick him 2 more times including a pick 6 to Holton Hill on what was great underneath coverage on Duke Thomas which lead to a high through. . . .the Cowboys would only score 1 TD after the 1st quarter and 3 FGs. Sadly our O. . . . .did not match the effort. OSU 27 1st downs, TEXAS 11 pretty much sums up the story. . . .the fact it was a 3 point game. . .again, a testament to the D.
Summation
To be clear, the Cheap Seats is a huge CFS fan, think he was the right hire for TEXAS. But losing control and costing your team points which tied the game. . . inexcusable. CFS has got to find a way to manufacture a win. . . I fear this team is losing confidence in close games. The opposite of Mack coached teams which through 2009, was one of the very best D1 programs for closing out games in the 4th or coming back in the fourth. The teams simply believed they were going to win. Now 2 weeks in a row we see special teams mistakes at the end cost us. And not just our punter letting the ball go through his hands. . . . Daje should have NEVER brought that last kickoff out. I get it, he's trying to make a play but instead they made a play inside the 10 and we added yet another unforced error and moved the ball inside the 5. 95 yards to go . . .less than 90 seconds. . .too big a hill to climb.
On Deck
TCU's D clearly is struggling. We are going to have to score, we are going to have to move the chains. Can we get part of the O we saw vs Cal combined with the D we saw vs Ok Lite? They are going to get some points, our secondary is still a weak link and Boykin is far more Zaire/Jackson than Rudolph but if we can get some stops and win the turnover battle.. . .this is not the sure loss many thought. CFS has a chance for a signature win. . .frankly he'll have that chance the next 2 weeks. We'll see.

UCLA-very impressive road win
ND-big game this week with Clemson but even a close loss and a 1 loss ND is most likely in the CFB playoffs barring 4 unbeatens
