FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TEXAS BASKETBALL

September 12, 2014

AUSTIN, Texas - University of Texas sophomore Martez Walker has been charged with a Class A misdemeanor for assault with injury.

Statement from Rick Barnes

“We are aware of the situation with Martez (Walker) and he is cooperating with campus police officials. We have consistently stressed to all of our student-athletes for a long time that any behavior in which women are not treated with respect will not be tolerated. Pending resolution, Martez has been suspended indefinitely from our basketball program and will not participate in any team functions.”

I'll wait to see what happens, but not a very smart move by Walker. First, the act itself is dumb. Second, Walker was already battling for minutes with Felix, Croaker, Yancy, Holland, and Barnett. Regardless of the outcome of the assault it's going to be difficult to get playing time now. That's why you shouldn't put yourself in these situations. For Walker's sake he better hope that he didn't lay his hands on a woman because I don't think Barnes will tolerate that. Not to mention that Barnes has 5 capable players that can play Walker's position. I'll wait to see what happens, but it wouldn't surprise me if Walker's days are done at Texas. No need to put up with that nonsense. Let him go and free up another scholarship for one of the elite shooting guards in this recruiting cycle.

Waking up to an email from the SID that came in overnight is rarely a good thing.

I never really understood why we offered him in the first place. So long to Walker and best wishes to the victim of another senseless attack.

Walker had potential but definitely not a player I'm going to throw my hands up and go crazy over. Walker looked good in the tournament, granted that was partly because Michigan and Arizona State were helping on Taylor and doubling Ridley.

All we need out of Yancy, Holland, Felix, Croaker, and Bennett is for them to hit some open three pointers. Taylor and Ridley are going to create open looks.  I really don't think there's a huge distinction between Holland, Yancy, Croaker and Walker. All have a bit of a different game, but in terms of productivity they are about the same IMO. If we are relying on those guys to begin with we are screwed, they are role players.

It makes no sense to keep Walker if these accusations are true. We are fine at the position IMO and it opens up a scholarship for another shooting guard. I'm not going to be upset if we lose Walker for say someone like McQuaid.

Kick him off the team.

Silver lining - opens up a scholly in a year we could use another one recruiting wise.

MORE NEGATIVE UT NATIONAL HEADLINES!  i cannot help but wonder, just what on earth would these clowns would do, if they actually had to fight a team of fighter's like ISIS  / ISIL?  i wonder just what would they do then.... freaking cowards!

This isn't good for Martez.

If your girlfriend is going out with another guy, leave her. Don't hit her. It's wrong and it's not worth losing this great opportunity. It's just not worth it man, plenty of fish in the sea. And get some consuling and anger management. Find ways to deal with your aggression in more constructive ways instead of violence.

I expect (and so do other people I talked to) that UT will dismiss Martez by the end of the weekend.
