FINAL SCORE: Oklahoma State 65 – Texas 63

1st Half: Oklahoma State 35 – Texas 24

  • On the opening possession, Myles Turner passed on an open 15 footer and attacked the rim. That’s exactly the mentality he needs – not just tonight, but for the rest of the season.
  • Texas started the game in man-to-man defense, but they’re 1-3 from the field and have 5 turnovers on offense. The defensive alignment doesn’t matter at this rate.
  • Kendal Yancy drove to the hoop on two straight possessions – that’s another extremely important change if Texas is going to turn their season around.
  • Barnes tried an interesting lineup that hasn’t played much yet (despite the heavy rotation):Taylor – Holland – Yancy – Turner – Ridley
  • Three consecutive 3-pointers opened up a 15 point lead for the Cowboys, but when the Texas offense is on pace for 20 points and 13 turnovers in the half, made 3’s by the opponent aren’t the issue.
2nd Half: Texas 32 – Oklahoma State 21

  • Jonathan Holmes went down hard early in the half. He was taken off the court and straight to the locker room. He was walking under his own power but was visibly woozy.
  • The Pokes are 2 of their last 10 from the floor. They are missing some decent looks, but Texas is also playing better defense.
  • The Horns are up to 17 turnovers at the 7:38 mark in the 2nd half. The rest of the stats are skewed by that total (ex: 44% field goals & 50% 3-point field goals).
  • Credit Travis Ford for slowing his team down. OSU is letting Texas lose.
  • Damarcus Holland is 4-4 from 3-point-range. He is the only reason the Horns are within striking distance.
  • Isaiah Taylor drove to the bucket 4 times in the game’s final two minutes. He went to his right every time, and OSU still couldn’t stop him.
Overtime Oklahoma State 9 – Texas 7

  • Myles Turner is growing roots on the bench.
  • Taylor and Ridley both have 4 fouls, the Longhorns don’t want to see double overtime.
  • Phil Forte missed a foul shot but made the second attempt to put the Cowboys up by 1. Forte has had a forgettable night.
  • Trailing by one, Lammert only made 1 of 2 free throws with 15 seconds left to tie the game.
  • Forte made a pair of free throws to give OSU a 2-point lead with 2.1 seconds. The Horns need a miracle and Jonathan Holmes isn’t on the floor.

Top takeaways

1. Texas is shooting 74% from the free throw line on the season. They shot 73% tonight. The timing of those misses was a killer.

2. Even before Holmes went to the locker room, Barnes was using a 3-guard lineup after a month of “we need better guard play”. Curious timing even though the team needed a shakeup.

The stat story

  • In the first half Texas had 13 turnovers. That total exceed their field goals, and their defensive rebounds.
  • 18 total Texas turnovers. OSU had 18 points off turnovers.
  • Texas did not score a single fast break point.
  • Texas only attempted two more free throws than Oklahoma State made.
  • Jonathan Holmes only played 10 minutes and did not score.
  • Anthony Hickey was 3-3 from beyond the arc and scored 15 total points. He was critical to OSU’s win.
  • Even with the added overtime minutes, Prince Ibeh and Jordan Barnett still played less than 9 minutes each. Rick Barnes only rotated 7 players tonight.

Looking ahead

On Saturday, Texas travels to Manhattan, KS to play the Wildcats. At their current pace that game will be ugly. The team then has back-to-back home games with TCU and Texas Tech.

Matt, in your honest opinion ,. . . is the season gone?

If so, do you think Barnes survives the season? Coaches next season?

We are in danger of being a 12 seed (again), or possibly/probably even missing the NCAA entirely

We are sitting on 8 losses with several more to come (9 games left + conf tourney)

I stopped watching the game after 10 minutes last night. The offense is just sickening. No continuity, no flow, and no shooters.

Just awful

I don't know what happens to Barnes coached teams, but they seem to regress rather than mature.  I have a friend who both played & coached Jr. college ball.  He was a much better coach than player.  He and two high school coaches all agreed that by mid season it is hard to determine what type offense Texas is running.  Also most seasons it appears our defense begins to break down.  Does Barnes push the players so hard early that they are spent and done by mid season?

Our players play afraid.  Not of the other team, but of their coach.

They often look frozen with fear -- the fear of doing something wrong, of bearing the wrath of Rick.

I think Texas will get the benefit of the doubt with the NCAA committee and at least get a tournament bid.

Rick Barnes will be given a "resign or less" choice and he'll resign, take his buyout, and go back to NC. Let's be real, you see Karen Astin just kill it in Women's basketball in just a few short years and Rick Barnes is still just treading water with no hope in sight.

If the saying is "We're Texas" and this is the representation of Texas Basketball, then the entire state is ashamed of this product.

I know this will sound aggy like but Texas got the majority of the bad calls last night. I lost count how many times the announcers stated "That was a bad call". Still, the Horns didn't help themselves with their sloppy play in the 1st half.

Taylor's bucket with 2 secs left should have counted & his FT should have been a +1. Instead it was a 1 & 1 which he missed, badly.

Ridley's 2 FTs to open OT should have been a +1 but they "ruled" it was a foul on the floor. Were the refs from Colorado or Washington?

The foul on Ridley (where he went straight up) was not called when Ibeh did it. Consistency is key when reffing.

Why was Turner on the bench most of the OT?

Holland was 4 of 4 from 3pt land during a stretch in the 2nd half. Those buckets helped Texas catch up & then he stopped shooting them. Why?

Last night was a bad loss, no other way to spin it. This is not the same team that played Kentucky.

We might make the tourney if the season were over.  But it's not.  We still have 9+ more games to play.  At our current level of play, we could easily have 12-13 losses, maybe even 14 or 15 -- who knows.  We will see.

And, even if we slink into the NCAA, we have the one and done stink all over us (again)

On Barnes' future, I pray Patterson doesn't go into the bunker with him ala Powers/Dodds/Brown

Like I said in the game thread, it's going to be very difficult for Texas to not make the tournament.

Our RPI is still entirely too good, plus outside of the top 10 the rest of the field is a complete mess. Heck, we are already back up to #25 in the KenPom.

I admit, I am not a real basketball guy, played some pickup ball and intramurals as a youth, but I am a  really a novice about the game and college level ball.  I am so disappointed about this team coming into the season - what they did vs. UConn, UK and then falling apart down the stretch. This team had SO much potential coming into this season.

I hope UT makes the Big Dance but I have fears based on what I have seen lately.

College basketball in general is a complete mess. Good luck to those that have to put the tournament bracket together.

LSU who is arguably the SEC's 3rd best team has now lost back to back games to teams that aren't even in the KenPom top 150 (Auburn and Miss. State).
