10. JK Dobbins: RB – La Grange

Film don’t lie: Dobbins is a package of dynamite in a 5’9, 176 pound frame.  Once the fuse is lit, get out of the way because Dobbins explodes out of the backfield with the potential to take the ball to the house every time.  His ability to get skinny at the line of scrimmage and find daylight in the smallest holes make him one of the biggest explosive play threats in the state.

Recruiting Radar: Dobbins holds 16 offers including Houston, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, and Texas A&M.

Interest in Texas: The Longhorns have yet to offer, but Dobbins has called Texas his dream school, and this recruitment could swing heavily in the Horns favor once an offer is extended.

9. Mannie Netherly: WR – Crosby

Film don’t lie: Two words: Catch radius.  Netherly uses his big frame well to catch anything thrown in his zip code.  His long-stride, speed and sure hands make him a red zone nightmare for opposing defenses.  Netherly also splits time at quarterback for Crosby and has a great understanding for how to use his big frame to separate from defenders. 

Recruiting Radar: Netherly holds 9 offers including BYU, SMU, and Texas Tech.  Playing quarterback might limit his exposure a bit, but he looks like a player poised for an explosion.

Interest in Texas: Non-existent early on.  Texas hasn’t thrown their hat in the ring for this one yet, but could become a factor if they decide to.

8. Hezekiah Jones: WR – Stafford

Film don’t lie: The saying is, “speed kills”…if that’s true then Hezekiah Jones should be on the FBI most wanted list.  Jones is a dynamo off the line who can run the entire route tree and is a threat to score on any play whether it’s a quick screen or a go route.  His athleticism, hands, and exceptional body control make him more than just a track star in football pads.  Jones is also a threat on special teams where he can contribute as a star returner.

Recruiting Radar: Jones holds 24 offers including Baylor, Florida, Michigan, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, and Texas A&M.

Interest in Texas: Texas increased their chances with an offer in May.  While Jones has yet to talk much about his top schools, it is safe to say Texas is in the conversation early on.

7. Derrick Tucker: S – Manvel

Film don’t lie: As a 6’3, 180 pound sophomore, Tucker is already a man grown.  Playing in a hybrid rover position that functions somewhere between an in-the-box safety and an outside linebacker, Tucker is a constant force near the line of scrimmage.  Tucker is a hard hitter and sure tackler with quick change of direction skills and plus athleticism.  He’s still growing into his body, and might eventually outgrow the safety position, but at this stage he looks like a must have defender.  What a talented group currently coming through Manvel.

Recruiting Radar: Tucker holds 9 offers including Utah, TCU, and Missouri.

Interest in Texas: Tucker has visited Texas on a few occasions, and camped with the Longhorns last season.  Texas is in a group he has listed as dream schools, but it might be tough to pull him away from the lure of the SEC.

6. Toneil Carter: RB – Langham Creek

Film don’t lie: Carter is without a doubt the top running back in the state in the 2017 class. He represents the total package and is built into a 6’1, 200 pound frame.  Carter is a classic one cut runner who plays with great vision, speed, and elusiveness.  He even flashes some power to break tackles and move the pile.  He is a threat receiving the ball and also appears to be the best player on his team’s kick coverage unit.  Carter has the look of a guy who could play a significant role from day one on a college campus.

Recruiting Radar: Carter holds an impressive offer list of 20 schools, including big name schools such as Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, TCU, Texas, and Texas A&M. 

Interest in Texas: An offer from Texas definitely got Carter’s attention, but the SEC looms large in his recruitment. Texas will be in the fight, but they are going to have to slug it out to win this battle.

5. Baron Browning: ILB – Kennedale

Film don’t lie: Browning is a giant kid for a sophomore at 6’4, 225 pounds and has great wheels to go along with that size.  The two words to describe him are explosive and violent.  Browning is not your traditional middle linebacker who only adds value at plugging holes in the run game – his athleticism and fluidity make him a threat in coverage. But Browning does his best work as a devastating blitz man, and has a knack for big plays. He’s always around the ball.

Recruiting Radar: Browning boasts 27 offers including Arkansas, Baylor, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Stanford, Texas, and Texas A&M. 

Interest in the Longhorns: Texas looks quite strong in this race early on.  Browning recently visited Austin and raved about the experience including a long and thoughtful conversation with Charlie Strong.  The Longhorns have made Browning a priority and should be in it until the end.  It’s early but Texas has to like their position here.
